Freezing Issue after Win 10 Anniversary update

Any official response yet on the freezing issue that is affecting some computers after installing the anniversary update?

I had to roll back to the previous version in order to get anything done today after several hours wasted on this update.

Hello Donal,

We realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with system freeze after Windows 10 anniversary update. We  will certainly help you.

This issue might occur due to many reasons. To isolate the issue perform the steps below:

To see if any other Third party software is causing the issue, I suggest you to perform the below troubleshooting steps and check.

Method 1: Run System Maintenance Troubleshooter

System Maintenance troubleshooter finds and clean up unused files and shortcuts and performs maintenance tasks.

Follow the steps given below:

  1. Type Troubleshooting in the Search box from the desktop.

  2. Select the Troubleshooting option.

  3. Select View All option and select the System Maintenance.

  4. Click on Next to perform the System Maintenance troubleshooter and follow the steps.

Method 2: If the issue still persists then,

Step 1: Start computer in safe mode.

Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10

Step 2: Perform Clean boot to avoid any third party software conflict.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: Please refer to the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

Hope it helps. Please perform the above methods and update the status of this issue, we will be happy to help you.

Thank you.

Hi,

I am seeing the same issue i had a previous issue to get it installed as i use an asus transformerbook t100ta  with only 32gb of harddrive after i got the Windows 10 Anniversary update installed i get the  same issue after 20 seconds it freezes up i logged into safe mode with networking and it is stable i had no issues what so ever before the 1607 update. I did install it on my windows 10 pro and no issues only it does not pick up my seagate external backup drive. The issues seems to be with the update itself and googling it i see i am not the only one. I had to remove the previous version as i was very low on disk space. Will there be a patch to fix this.

I updated the following devices and I noticed the issue only for Surface Pro 3:

1. Desktop - Through Windows update

2. Lenovo Stick PC - Through Windows Anniversary Update Advisor

3. Surface Pro 3 - Through Windows Anniversary Update Advisor

I performed the steps defined in the following article and it seemed to have fixed so far: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083595

Also, there is a huge thread on this on Reddit:

I have a HP dv7 pavillon notebook with 16GB RAM, i7 processor, 1st HD=128GB SSD and 2nd HD=4TB HDD inside.

I installed the Redstone Update several times now (it took me more than 3 days by now) and here are the results:

1) Upgrade vom Windows 10 1507: Freeze every 10 to 20 Seconds for minutes.

2) Downloaded Redstone ISO and made a clean install from booting CD: Same as in 1)

3) Used the migration tool and made an USB-Stick and Clean Install: Same as in 1)
4) Tried almost all of the given hints in THIS (very popular) Thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/4vufpo/windows_10_fully_freezes_after_anniversary_update/

Result same as in 1)

5) I unplugged the 2nd HDD and did a clean install from CD again: WORKED FINE!. I managed to run W10 properly about half an hour. Then I replugged the 2nd HDD: Freeze again.

So for now my conclusion is: If there is another HDD working the process stopps everytime when a lookup on the 2nd drive runs. and that means: all the time. I still can't work and decided to roll back to the old version until this is fixed.

BTW: Complains about 3rd-party Programms are all false alarm.

Sangeeta Sarkar's advice seems to be generic, and did not result in a correct fix for me on my business PC.  The absence of a detailed description, and responsive solution, from Microsoft after a week of awareness of this issue is certainly troubling.

I also followed some common advice (making the rounds on Reddit) to change the startup field value for the appXsvc registry entry, again without affecting a solution to the problem.

Just to be clear, the issue for me is that the new installation seems to be fine at bootup, but soon becomes unresponsive: the cursor changes to the round "wait" cursor and it just sits there.

Like Felix von Ackern above, I have a PC with two SSDs (and an additional HDD used only for storage).  I have not yet tried any fixes relating to the removal or reconfiguration of the HDDs in my machine.

I have a notebook computer (Dell XPS-13) that received the update with no difficulties, other than the annoying and utterly-preventable decision to repopulate the task bar with icons I already got rid of previously and to change my default font settings.

I'm led to suspect the issue--at least the one plaguing me--relates to hard drives.  Bizarre that there is no solution...I will be reverting to the last install and will not attempt this again in the near future.

I noticed an error in my event viewer: source - storahci with an inner exception of "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued"

Using the following link, I unlocked the AHCI Link Power Management in power management in windows. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/177819-ahci-link-power-management-enable-hipm-dipm.html

I set the setting to Active (meaning the hard drives are not allowed to power down while the machine is still on). The error is now gone completely.

NOTE: This can be achieve without registry modification by using the High Performance Power option.

Changing the value to 4 for Start in Registry Editor worked for me. See Method 4 here http://appuals.com/windows-10-freezes-crashes-after-anniversary-update/

You're talking about the AppX Deployment Service, which is normally not running much (it's on-demand).  Note the side effect of disabling it: "if disabled Store applications will not be deployed to the system, and may not function properly."

This also works for me but some app doesn't work.

Instead disabling pcx sleep in advanced power option fix the problem for me.

There's a problem with ahci that was present also in window 8, by the way i'm using windows from 3.11 and this was the worst update of ever, worth than windows Me or Vista
