Word 2010 document will not open - illegal xml character - HELP

I was creating a document in word 2010 and saving to my thumb drive and from my thumb drive back to my hard drive to make sure I had exact copies.  I had been doing this for four days with no problems.  Then as I finished I saved document from hard drive to thumb drive and was looking at document in thumb drive, saw a change I wanted to make and then saved back to hard drive.  Shortly I tried to open the document on the hard drive and got the message that the document could not be open because of problems with content.  Details said illegal xml character.  and gave location Part:  /word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column 332716

I have never seen this happen before and I use this process all the time, working from home on my laptop - copying to thumb drive and taking to office.

Any suggestions how I can recover this file?

Thank you for the responses but it is not a file I can share.  I have resigned myself to recreating the document and hopefully with numerous backup locations this will not happen again.
