I'm Nik, an independent advisor here and happy to assist you with this query.
As you know that Teams is evolving and Microsoft developers are working on new features roll out every day.
After looking on recent updates, I found that there is only 2x2 video grid available as of today. apparently, some users mentioned that they had received 3x3 grid and later it switches back to 2x2 grid however there is no official announcement yet.
I completely understand that this feature is important for users, so we suggest you participate in official UserVoice forum to submit your ideas/bug to the developer team. When I looked in UserVoice forum there are already some discussions on the same topic that you would like to participate and upvote:

2. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555...
Please let me know if you have any further question on this and I will be happy to assist.
Regards
Nik

Yeah it seems really odd that we had 3x3 view for a short while then someone took the decision to remove that for Linux users.
As far as I know Teams is an Electron app? So it would be the same app on any platform, which makes it doubly weird as this makes it look like Linux users are being actively limited here on app functionality.

Yes, MS teams is designed on Electron and it maintains parity between Teams versions across different operating systems. However, some features may take time before it rollout across all platforms.
You can follow Microsoft 365 roadmap to know upcoming fixes and features rollout schedule. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/r...
I hope it will be helpful.

However, some features may take time before it rollout across all platforms.
This was a feature though, and then removed.
Which implies a decision to remove it for just Linux users.
It doesn't need a feature specific to Linux to be rolled out, it needs a feature of the application not being actively prevented for Linux users.
It seems like work has gone into preventing Linux users having access to a feature already available.
This seems more the situation as it's a Electron app, which should work the same on any platform.
So the issue isn't so much application/client side, but a server side decision of what resources are accessible to the app based on the operating system of the user.
Which sucks.
I highly doubt that a decision of the development team, more likely an instruction from higher up?

I understand your concern and I understand this feature is very much requested by other users as well. I could look in some UserVoice and voted them. However, it will be difficult for me to comment on something that is not official or available in Microsoft content yet. As of today Microsoft teams app supports 2x2 grid view on linux OS. We know that the Teams is evolving, so we may expect to see this feature in near future.
This forum is targeted to end-users support, and I would not be able to comment on product group decisions. So, I would suggest you to open a discussion/participate in Uservoice, TechCommunity or new Q&A forums.

I'm not sure what the point of up voting the ticket in the teams feedback forum is (though I did), all the other tickets around the linux one have comments from the Teams engineer saying it is being "worked on", in "backlog" or "under review" the request
for features on linux is completely ignored, no response whatsoever???
As has been stated we the top feature being requested, accidentally?, then someone turned it off again, so we know these features already worked fine on Linux, we can then only conclude keeping linux behind is an intentional strategy, hence no engineer will
even respond as to why we got the features and had them taken away again..
Yet Mac is kept up to date with Windows?!?! hmmmmm
So much for "MS loves Linux"..

As an educator who can currently only see 4 of 30 of his students, I implore you to reenable this feature for Linux users. This is damaging children and their quality of education.
We all know that this feature to see at least 9 people was once available but then suddenly removed. I do not know the circumstances of the decision to the removal, but that is becausr you are VERY intransparent with your reasons and it gives it an unethical feel that this issue is fought on the expense of children's education.
