Select menu items from keyboard (like ALT+letter in Word for Windows)?

I find it convenient to use keyboard shortcuts, when available, rather than moving my hands repeatedly back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse (or trackpad).

In Word for Windows it's possible to select menu items using the keyboard: ALT + the initial letter of the menu item, followed by the initial letter of the submenu item(s).

Is there a similar mechanism in Word 2008?

The shortcut to control the Menu bar is Control + F2.
