Windows Explorer has stopped working

If you’re experiencing random Windows Explorer crashes, here are a few things to try:

1.      Safe Mode - Boot into Safe Mode and see if you experience the same crashes:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

2.      Clean boot - If you don’t experience the same crashes in Safe Mode, it’s very likely a startup item is causing the issue. Follow the steps found on the following link to perform a clean boot and pinpoint the item causing the issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

3.      Scan your system for infections – Use your favorite antivirus software to scan for any infections that might be hiding on your system. You can also use the Microsoft Safety Scanner to scan your system for infections. Don’t have an antivirus? Download Microsoft Security Essentials for free by following the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

4.      Update Drivers - If you’re finding that you still have the same messages after a clean boot and your system is clean of infection, ensure you have the very latest drivers for your hardware directly from the manufacturer. The easiest way to do this is by visiting your system manufacturer’s website or by contacting them directly.

5.      Test your system’s RAM – Sometimes faulty RAM (Random-Access Memory) can cause intermittent problems within Windows. Use the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool by clicking Start, type Memory Diagnostics and select the result in the list. When the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool window appears, choose Restart now and check for problems (recommended).
