Witcher 2 disc install stops at 42%

Hey all,

I recently purchased a NEW copy of witcher 2. I downloaded disc 2 without a problem, however disc 1 stops installing at 42% every time. I've noticed that the disc stops being spun in the disc drive usually around 35%, with short bursts of spinning from that point until 42% where it says it can't read the disc. The disc has no apparent damage to it. Now my first though was maybe I somehow got a faulty disc, but I've noticed online that I'm not the only one who has run into this issue... However I haven't had any luck finding a fix. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem was and how to fix it? I'm thinking it's probably likely the disc is just faulty and needs to be replaced but  I would like to try and fix the issue rather than take it into the store and try and get them to replace it if I can...

oh and just so everyone knows, I managed to play the very first little tutorial bit off of disc two but when it asked me to insert disc one I got the black screen of nothingness... So i guess for some reason my Xbox just can't read disc one...  Has no issues reading other disc from other games.

Thanks in advance

Reposting as to suggest an answer.

Since you've said that you have no problems playing other discs (and I assume installing them as well?), the most plausible issue is that there's an error with the disc itself. If at all possible, try installing the disc on another console, be it your own, a friend's or family member's, as this will confirm whether or not the disc is at fault.

If that is the case, the best course of action may be to return to the store and get a refund or a replacement.

Hi, thanks for the reply

I tried again to make it work this morning, and it wouldn't work, so I took it into the store and got a new copy. I'm still having the same problem... The disc stops installing at 42% because it says it can't read it...

I really don't understand what's wrong with it... I had no problems installing disc 2, and no problems installing or playing other games....

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm clearly not the first person to have this problem... Doesn't look like these people figured out what to do about it either though.

After searching extensively online, and asking friends that own the game, it seems that there must be bad pressings circulating the market.

I sadly cannot seem to find a certain fix for this, other than uninstalling both discs and attempting again, ensuring your console is lying horizontally, which seems to have worked for a minority, but obviously, not all.

Since you've tried getting a replacement from the store already, all I can suggest is contacting Xbox Support directly by calling 0800 587 1102, which to my knowledge, is a free to ring number, and contacting CD Projekt Red (the devs) through;

Sorry that I can't be of much help, I know how much it must suck to have purchased a game and not have it working :(

Actually, you're the first person to have responded to help me so in my books you're very helpful! =)

Anyways I did email CD Projekt RED support, and I got a reply:

         Hello,

Have you tried performing a factory reset of your console? Is your console up to date?

So, not overly helpful yet but it's a start! I'm glad I heard back from them anyways. I don't really think they'll have much of a solution for me either though, I think it's as you said, bad "pressings", and I just got unlucky that the store I bought from had multiple bad ones in it.

I don't want to try a full system restore on my Xbox as he suggested just cause that would wipe all my game progress in every other game... I don't have it all backed up to an external drive (haha maybe that's my next project after I figure this out... Would probably be a good idea). But I don't think it would make a difference if I did a restore or not...  If it's a bad disc then there shouldn't be anything wrong with my console. And I did try installing a couple other games (Skyrim and dark souls 2, both large RPGs that should simulate similar installation conditions as witcher), and they were just fine. I was able to play them without issue and they installed fairly quickly.

So I think my next best bet would probably be to go to a different store, like ebgames maybe, and buy a (tested) used copy that I know works in other consoles. Then if I still have problems I can back up my system to an external hard drive and try the system restore that CD Projekt RED suggested. And then if it doesn't work after that then I don't know haha!

I will keep this forum updated on how it all works out though so that future witcher 2 players with the same problem don't have to waste as much time trying to figure it out =P

Well, new update

I took my second copy to a friends house to try it out on their console... And it worked perfectly.

So now I'm just sad cause clearly it's an issue with my console...

I tried it again on my console today. I had previously deleted any prior information related to Witcher in order to try and make t work... So when I put it in,  it asked me to update - so I did - but then it froze. I had to force it to shut down and then I started it up again, and it was working for a bit, it started playing the little intro scene that comes on before you get to the main menu... But then it gave me that same disc read error as before.

Could it possibly be an issue with the update because it froze? How would I go about getting it to fix that update without freezing so I could increase my chances of successfully reading the disc so I can just install the game and not worry about it anymore?

I was thinking I might be able to call Microsoft and ask if they can provide me with a digital copy download since I can't get it to download from my disc?
