Can't to connect to friend on same connection

My friend is signed in on his account on my connection and I'm signed in on my account on the same connection, yet we can't connect to each other in Halo: Reach and play games. We have also tried connecting to an XbL Party with no success. Any suggestions?

Do you have any issues with the profiles when only one is being used at a time? And to be sure, both of these consoles are on the same home network, yes?

Not sure what the problem was, but we signed out and then back in and everything worked from there on out.
