Trnasfer file using Homegroup in Windows 8

Original Title: Connecting 2 computers win 7 to win 8?

I just ordered a new computer that has windows 8. I have never done this with previous computers.

Can I connect both computers together so I can transfer my document folder to the new computer.

Rather than using an external drive or usb to transfer certain files.

Can this be done by a usb cord or some other way?

thanks for any assistance,

Bruce

Hi brucefl,

Thank you for opting for Windows 8.

You can transfer your files between two computers using a Homegroup network.

A homegroup makes it easier to share files and printers on a home network. You can share pictures, music, videos, documents, and printers with other people in your homegroup. Other people can't change the files that you share, unless you give them permission to do so.

You can prevent specific files or folders from being shared, and you can share additional libraries later. You can help protect your homegroup with a password, which you can change at any time.

Please follow the steps given below to create a home group:

a) From the Control Panel settings click HomeGroup. Then in the left panel under Libraries and Devices, switch on the types of files and devices you want to share.
b) Under Membership, a password is automatically generated for you. You’ll need this to connect your other Windows 7 computer.
c) You can change the password to something easier to remember — which will make things easier when joining other systems. Press Win Key + W to bring up the Search box for Settings. Type: network and sharing then click on Network and Sharing Center from the results field on the left.
d) The Network and Sharing Center window opens on the Desktop. On the left side click HomeGroup under See Also.
e) Now under Other Home Group Actions click Change the Password.
f) Make sure any other machines that might be already joined are powered off or sleeping, then click Change the Password.
g) Here you can type in your own password that’s easier to remember. Click Finish.
h) After a few seconds, you’ll get the following screen letting you know the Homegroup password has been successfully change. Click Finish and close out of the remaining open screens.

Join Windows 7 to Windows 8 HomeGroup

a) Now go to the other machines running Windows 7 to join the Homegroup. Here I am using a Windows 7. Click Start and type: homegroup into the Search box and hit Enter.
b) On the next screen click on the Join Now button.
c) Then decide which files and folder you want to share on the Windows 8 HomeGroup. Click Next.
d) Enter in the password and click Next.
e) Now you’re successfully connected to the Windows 8 Homegroup. Click Finish.
f) Now you can easily share document, files and printers between the Windows 8 and Windows 7 computers over your home network.

Ok, I have my windows 7 whichi s not wireless connected to a westell  wireless modem router, the

New computer although comes witha wireless connection will be plugged into the router.

This is my first endevour into homegroup. I just want to transfer the info. I could take the hd out and put i in the new one, just trying to do this the easiest as possible.

I am assume you are saying in connecting both to the router/modem I will be able to connect to both computers?

Or will I have to do it another way? USB, Ethernet. My router/modem works with my printer,so I am assume it works on the same idea? Like I said, all I need now is to transfer some folders (large) that contain a lot of information in the easiest way possible.

Appreciate the assistance

Bruce

After following your complete instructions, how do you transfer the files from Win 7 laptop to Win 8 laptop.  Is it a simple copy and paste?
