"ERROR_NOT_FOUND (0x80070490)" when trying to install SP1 in Windows7Pro (x64):

Hi.  Every time I try to install SP1 (KB976932) in a Windows 7 Pro (x64) laptop, the installation fails with the cryptic error message: ERROR_NOT_FOUND (0x80070490).  In searching the web for a similar error, I found in a Microsoft forum the solution proposed < http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/bfb3e5b5-a3bd-4124-b4d6-7fb437ac7b74/ > by the participant Ben-IS, which has been successfully replicated by others.  In my case, however, this solution does not seem to apply.

Running sfc /scannow in cmd.exe with admin privilege and then checking the file CBS.log for this error, I find a number of entries with one the following formats :
  • Info  CBS  Failed to get session package state for package: Package_6_for_KB2653956~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.5 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

These error entries are often repeated (especially those in reference to Package 6) and are preceded by declarations of self updating of this type :

In case it has relevance, the laptop (Gateway NV79) came with Win7 Home Premium preinstalled and it was upgraded to Win 7 Pro with a Windows Anytime Upgrade key purchased from Microsoft.  I contacted Microsoft 3-4 months after such version upgrade when I got the SP1 installation error message for the first time, but received no help whatsoever.  Any informed suggestions on how to fix this problem, so I can finally install SP1?  TIA

Hi AD-HOC,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community. As per the problem description you are not able to install service pack 1 (KB976932). Provide the following information:

·         Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

·         Are you able to install other updates successfully?

·         Are you using any third party security software?

I will help you with this issue. I would suggest you to follow these methods.

Method 1: Disable the security software temporarily.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against virus and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
