Import video from my Sony Video Camera via Firewire the playback occurs at twice the speed in Movie Maker Windows 7

Try importing the videos on a different computer to check if it's an issue with the Sony Camera or with the computer.

It's not the camera.  I've been using this camera for a few years and downloading video to my XP box.  From here the files were pulled to "My Book" external drive for storage.  My-Book is now hooked up to my new Win7 PC and if I play any of those older files pulled from the XP box they play just fine.  Did my camera break or change within one week, possible, but unlikely.  I can hook up the XP box and try it just for laughs but until then I'm sure it's not the camera.

I put the old 1394 PCI (firewire card) into my new HP Compact Win7 pc to test it - it was a little hard to do give this is a low profile pc compared to my Dell running XP which is a tower, but with the lid off I was able to get it in.  I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE OLD CARD. 

I also noticed that as I'm extracting video with Microsoft's Import Video, the display screen is running the video at normal speed, I watch the counter tick off 20 seconds and yet the import line shows 9 seconds.  Which equates to playback speed where I said things run twice as fast hence a 20 sec video is now about 10. 

I tried installing "InstallQ Codec by InstallX, LLC" and this did nothing for me.  Rebooted, uninstalled, ran registry cleaner, rebooted.

Then installed "Windows 7 Codec Pack" and this to did nothing to help.  Rebooted, uninstalled, ran reg cleaner, rebooted again.

Took my camera and hooked it up to my old XP box, downloaded the same footage and guess what - IT RAN JUST FINE, NORMAL SPEED!!!

There's no doubt something his hosed up with Microsoft's Video Import.  I'm going to try Roxio Creator 10 Suite, install this and see what happens.  If this is a MS issue, then it will never get looked at or fixed by MS as only .005% of users make use of Movie Maker.  Today's population only cares about wasting their time on Facebook, Tweeting, and watching videos of Kardashian's hence the big push for Win8.

Please, I've been importing video for a few years now and yes things have changed slightly with Win7 but it's still very straight forward.  As mentioned above in my original post I stated I'm using Win7's "Import Video" to do the import, third paragraph down so maybe I'm missing something when you said you're unclear as to what I'm using to import?

When I fire up my Sony DV camera "Import Video" auto recognizes the device and asks me if I wish to install the whole tape, segments, and to give the project a name.  So again "Import Video" which is Win7 and then no matter what application I use to playback the video it runs too fast BUT and I STRESS this is 100% an issue with the import video application and NOT the playback such as Movie Maker, Media Player, etc.  Why...... because when importing I can see playback speed and capture speed and they don't sync.  In the capture window everything looks good (speed) and it will show 12 seconds but the capture will show 6 seconds, which again cooresponds to what I see when playing it back, everything is twice as fast.

ALSO... to prove this is a Windows issue, I installed Roxio Creator 10 and now I capture video at the proper speed (using Roxio) and it plays back at normal speed in any application I use.

Again - a Windows issue which they will not fix as they could careless about the 200 or 300 people using this feature, they only care about those people who spend a majority of their life on face book and tweeting about the food they just ate as say doing something with their life like exercising and staying healthy, or just imagine if all those people spent a fraction of that facebook time by helping a charitable organization.

Note: When the troubleshooting is over do not forget to reset the computer to normal startup.

Over a year after Kent_65olds' post above, I'm importing video with "Import Video" into a Windows 7 high performance laptop over Firewire.  Getting the same problem, but not consistently.  They are old MiniDV tapes I'm capturing from a Sony DVR camera, and some clips are a bit corrupted now (some jitters in sound and video on some clips).

I see the same problem - plays normally on the camera (apart from those jitters) while capturing but plays too fast on some clips on playback on the PC.  Some clips are only playable in Quicktime too - Windows playback software refuses to play them.

However, issue only happens on the worst of those corrupted clips.  I am watching it capture now and the camera shows 12 minutes of video played so far, but the "Import Video" software is showing only 6 minutes captured, even though it's supposed to be capturing the whole tape.

Will try some 3rd party capture tool such as Roxio and see if it makes a difference.
