Windows 7 Service Pack 1 made my computer slow down

Yesterday I was dumb enough to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 in my HP dv6-1253cl laptop and now all programs in my laptop take longer to start up, compared to the day before yesterday. I've installed no additional software or hardware in the meantime. The only difference is the Service Pack. My main program, Call of Duty World at War now takes FIVE times as long to start and also between screens. Response is now also lagging and all programs now freeze for about 30 to 45 seconds before they respond again.

I've tried uninstalling the Service Pack 1, but inexplicably there remain a ton of updates that weren't removed.

Doesn't Microsoft check the quality of the patches they release? What can i do now to regain the performance i had only two days ago?

Hi   daffy688's,

Windows 7 Service pack and other Windows Updates are released to improve the performance, reliability and security of the system, there could be several causes why you are experiencing performance issue on your computer.

I would like to clarify if you have uninstalled or removed Service Pack 1 from your computer.

You may try the following steps:

Method 1: Run the performance troubleshooter and then check

Open the Performance troubleshooter

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Performance-troubleshooter

Method 2:  If a Windows Resource Protection (WRP) file is missing or is corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected.Run System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix any corrupt system files. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in the link below:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Method 3:   Put the computer in clean boot and then check to see if the issue persists

Follow  Step 1 in the link below,
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

If everything works fine after a clean boot, you can infer that some third party services are causing the problem.

Proceed with the remaining steps to pin-point out the third party service.

After you figure out the problem causing program, you may have to update or install a higher version of the program, if you seldom use that software you can consider uninstalling it.

Important: - Remember to put the computer back to normal startup follow   step 7 in the link.

I too had the same problem.  Quad Core Desktop, 4 gig Ram, 500 gig HD 2/3 empty...I defrag 2 x a week and run AV and don't go on any websites or have torrent or any of that stuff.  My machine is clean for business only.

My machine was running pretty fast until I installed SP1 for Windows 7, 64 Bit last weekend (FEb 25, 2011).

Now it is SLOW booting, it takes 2-3 minutes, and programs are extremely slow to respond.

Can you make any suggestions outside of reimaging my entire system that would clean this up?

I don't want to have to get on phone support for MS Office Small Business and argue that I am reimaging my system and they should let me reinstall my 1 license.  I had to put up with this recently...and I was very upset.

Best Regards,

ScottKG.
