Start menu missing from Windows 10

I am using windows 10 for almost 2 plus months without any hitch. Since last 2 days, the start menu is not appearing when I press on the Windows 10 icon at the left side in the task bar. However others users on the same laptop donot have this issue.

For me, to sign off, I need to right-click on the windows 10 icon and proceed.

Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, and click Command Prompt (Admin) on the drop down menu. Type cd\ and press ENTER. Type "powershell" without the quotes and press the ENTER key. Paste into the command prompt Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}. Type exit and press the ENTER key and type exit and press the ENTER key a second time.

Restart the computer and test whether the Start menu now works.

Hi Balakrishnan,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand that the Start menu is missing from the desktop. We will assist you to resolve the issue.

This issue may arise when some of the Windows components gets corrupted.

I suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if it helps.

System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files. Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

1. Press the Windows button + Ron your keyboard, and type cmd.
2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin). You must run the command prompt in Administrator level.
3. On the command prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter.
4. If everything went okay and no errors were found, restart your computer and see if the issue re-occurs.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to perform DISM from the below link.

The DISM or System Update Readiness tool may help you to fix some Windows corruption errors.

Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance. We will be happy to help.

Thank you.

I have had the same problem with my new laptop already loaded with Windows 10. After a LOT of frustration, I set the PC to restore to factory setting after I had downloaded quite a few apps. It did bring the startup buttons back, but only for about 2 hours.  Then they disappeared again. I took it back to BestBuy, and the very helpful employee there fixed my problem immediately. The buttons were hiding. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left of the screen and look up at the TOP left of the screen. You will see 3 little bars...click on that and the startup buttons show up again. Even though I felt dumb, I was elated at the same time. Hope this is your problem, too.
