How do i transfer files from old HP to a new Dell (Trojan's involved)?

Ok,

My work PC got majorly infected. So boss decided to buy a new one. This is were my question comes into play. How can i transfer all the files and documents from the old HP(vista) PC, over too the new Dell(8.1 pro)PC? Without transferring ANY of the Trojans or viruses? I have looked around on forums. And seen a couple of ways to do it. But none were clear as to if there was any danger of transferring the Trojan over to new machine.

Old HP still boots but runs wicked slow do to Trojans. I have a backup disk that we made weekly on Old HP. But i am worried it may have fragments of Trojans. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Moved fromVista Repair and Recovery Forum.

Yikes, glad I store all my files on OneDrive now so that if I get a new computer, all my files just come with me automatically.

Ideally, you would get your files from the old computer "offline", that is, don't boot up that computer from the infected disk.  Instead, attach the hard drive to another computer by external enclosure connection, or boot up from a CD and then copy just the specific files you need -- being careful not to copy anything extra).  But again, I must stress that you must do this without booting from the infected disk, or the virus can intercept anything you try to backup and attach itself.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft community.

You cannot use Windows Vista backup disk on Windows 8.1. If you were using Windows 8, you could have used Windows 7 File Recovery. You can recover the files using another Windows vista/7 working computer and use it on the computer running Windows 8.1.

Since you mentioned you have Trojans on old HP computer and you created backup disk. There might be chances of computer getting infected.

In addition to Shawn suggestion, I would suggest you to scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software on your old computer and then try transferring the files to Windows 8.1.

Method 1: The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Disclaimer: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Method 2: If you are using Windows 8. You may follow these steps:

Note: This is not applicable for Windows 8.1

  1. Go to "Control Panel" -> System and Security ->File History.
  2. You'll see "Windows 7 File Recovery" on the left hand side at the bottom of the screen. Click on it to access "Back up or restore your files" screen (it says Windows 7 but it works for Vista as well).
  3. Click on "Select another backup to restore files from" under "Restore". You'll get a pop-up screen prompting you to select the backup location (make sure the drive with the backup is connected to the computer). Click "Next" to continue.

Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.
