Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft community.
You cannot use Windows Vista backup disk on Windows 8.1. If you were using Windows 8, you could have used
Windows 7 File Recovery. You can recover the files using another Windows vista/7 working computer and use it on the computer running Windows 8.1.
Since you mentioned you have Trojans on old HP computer and you created backup disk. There might be chances of computer getting infected.
In addition to Shawn suggestion, I would suggest you to scan your computer with Microsoft Safety Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software on your old computer and then try transferring the files to Windows
8.1.
Method 1: The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Disclaimer: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.
Method 2: If you are using Windows 8. You may follow these steps:
Note: This is not applicable for Windows 8.1
- Go to "Control Panel" -> System and Security ->File History.
- You'll see "Windows 7 File Recovery" on the left hand side at the bottom of the screen. Click on it to access "Back up or restore your files" screen (it says Windows 7 but it works for Vista as well).
- Click on "Select another backup to restore files from" under "Restore". You'll get a pop-up screen prompting you to select the backup location (make sure the drive with the backup is connected to the computer). Click "Next"
to continue.
Hope this helps. If you need further assistance with Windows, let us know and will be glad to help.
