Windows 8/8.1 Explorer hangs when renaming a file through MTP

Hi,

I've been itching to talk about this problem for a long time, But was waiting for a solution to come up through windows updates. I was having this issue since i had Windows 8 64 bit. I would connect my Lumia using a USB cable and copying back and forth are fine, Moving too is OK, But cannot rename a single file or folder whatsoever. Another problem with Windows Explorer makes it hang every time i open a folder with executables (.exe). It just freezes till all the thumbnails are generated for the exe's and believe me, it takes some time. This issue too started with Windows 8.
I am using Windows for 6 years now. Started with WinXP Pro x86, Win7 x64, Win8 x64, and now Win8.1 x64.
And now is the first time i am in such a rage like this.
I Update my PC daily.
Attaching screenshots and system information.

Renaming files in SD Card

Renaming files in Phone Memory

Opening a folder with Executables. I would have to wait till all those blank icons turn to proper thumbnails.

I tried my friend's LG optimus phone. Same results. I went on the web and found these

Those i can understand... maybe a miscommunication between android and Windows. But Windows Phone and Windows? Are you kidding me?
They say these share 33% code or something... isn't that supposed to help them work along better?
I don't know, but i think they need to.
I mean, i can't even use a Wireless LAN network with my Windows Phone and Windows, but an android phone can,
I don't have remote desktop access from my Windows Phone to Windows, but android has,
I don't have home group functionality, no inherent way to sync files
(Yes i have the Windows Phone app, isn't much of a thing, every other manufacturer has an alternative. I am talking about core integration)

Thats another case. atleast i would like my Phone to run along with my PC.

PS: I previously joined in a conversation about facebook not syncing on my phone. Its been a few days and i still have nothing. The problem persists even after 2 weeks now. I use a Nokia Lumia 620.

Hi,

This issue may occur if there is an issue with the Memory card or due to system files missing. Before we start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to know some information about this issue.

1. Are you facing this issue only while connecting an external device?

2. Do you get any error code or error message?

3. Are you able to rename files when you haven't connected any external devices?

4. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

I would suggest you run the System File Check scan and check if it helps. System File Checker will help you replace missing or corrupted System Files.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

Also check if the issue persists when you have not connected the mobile/any device to the computer.

Please reply with more information about the issue, so that we could help you better.

Hi,

Thanks for responding.
I'm not facing this issue with anything other than 'MTP', just 'MTP'... nothing else. normal windows folders, normal removable media.. everything works fine
No error codes, No messages. It just freezes, like in the screen shot. If i click anywhere, it asks me whether to forcefully close it or wait for it to respond.
I CAN rename any files in my PC or any other removable media when i have connected a MTP device or not. I just can't do it inside the storage of that MTP device.
I did use my Win8 variant for long and there might be issues of corrupt files there, but since then i did a fresh install of Win8.1 from scratch and i'm pretty sure this issue persists.
Yes, i did run sfc. No use.

Hope i helped...

This has been a known issue for a long time. There still has yet to be any solution for most android device. The advice you suggested does not resolve this problem.

Rename a file or folder on an android system that is under MTP. Always lag and freezes the windows explorer => causing WE to restart.

This does not occur on a Unix system like Mac or Linux. Which implies that it is on Microsoft's end to fix this.

Please fix it.

Thanks.

Oh come on, Microsoft, this has been an issue for AGES.
All version of Windows, all MTP devices - it's just broken from the base.

Hi Dileep,

First of all, I would like to apologize for the late reply.

In most of the scenarios this issue is caused due to drivers for Media Transfer Protocol porting kit.

However you may try to install the available Windows Updates, including Optional Updates. There might be possibilities that the updated drivers for the device might be released through Windows update. Try Try the following steps for the same:
a. At the Start screen, type Windows Update.
b. Click or tap Settings on the right side of the screen, and then select Install optional updates from the left results.
c. When the Windows Update control panel opens, click on Check for Updates on the top left corner to receive a fresh list of updates.

Please reply with the status of the issue, so that we could help you sort out the issue.

No, it doesn't matter and has nothing to do with updates or kits.
It happens on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, with updates, without updates, with every single MTP device I have tried, on every single computer I have tried.
The protocol on Windows is broken.

Hi,

Yes i do regularly check for updates everyday and install them. As for the past few days, i'm only receiving Windows Defender Definition updates.
I'm pretty sure that i'm running an updated system.

Hi Ambious,

They fixed the problem for me. A guy from Microsoft support center called me, i did as he said.
He ran a couple of scripts and asked me to duplicate the problem. Then he fixed it for me right away.
So happy right now, to know that they care :D

Just wanted you to know that there is a solution. Wish they implemented it in the next update.

Thats Great!

Mind sharing what was done so the Other users of Microsoft OS can fix this issue also...
All these issues with MS Drivers and OS incompatibilities are really taking a toll.

Firewire Driver would be nice that does not corrupt my 4tb Gdrive would be a great start!
