Mail/Calendar Apps Crash Few Seconds After Launch

This started happening on two machines with Windows RTM (neither are insider builds) a couple of weeks ago for both my and my wife's accounts.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the communication apps with:

Remove-AppxPackage microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps

Going into the Outlook sync settings and disabling the Email sync option prevents the apps from crashing, but of course that defeats the purpose of the mail app.

On one of the machines I even did a hard reset of Windows to no avail.

I'm at my wit's end on this one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Ensure to install any pending updates and restart the computer to check if this helps.

Method 2: I suggest you to follow the below link and run the App troubleshooter and check if it helps.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/apps_windows_10-outlook_mail/windows-10-mail-and-calendar-apps-stop-responding/345a4dbc-8502-414b-8ff3-5973c1e0d8ea

Method 3: If the problem still persist, press this key combination: CTRL+SHIFT+ESC when you are on windows 10.

This will open Task Manager

  1. Click File > Run New Task on Task Manager.
  2. Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”.
  3. Type CMD.
  4. Type the following commands at the CMD prompt:
             dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
             sfc /scannnow

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

I've tried all three methods; the problem persists. Below is the output from Method 3:

Per a suggestion made by @WindowsSupport on Twitter, I also tried Gagriel Aul's solution listed here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_perf/windows-10-some-metro-apps-not-working/41695ba8-b856-46dd-80ef-d342e5bc0cb3?Ocid=1.%20Owned%20NA%20(Reactive)_Social_TWITTER_WindowsSupport_20150919_238266180

The solution did not solve the problem.

A Microsoft support escalations engineer and I were able to narrow the crash down to recurring calendar appointments sent from iOS (Mac too?) devices.

I only had one message of this type. After going to outlook.com and ensuring that it was removed from ALL folders that automatically get downloaded by Windows Mail (i.e. Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted, Sent), Windows Mail stopped crashing. If you prefer, you can create a new mail folder and move the offending messages there since Windows Mail won't download it automatically by default; the effect is the same.

This information has presumably been passed on to the development team.
