Slow/throttled OneDrive downloads on Bell Fibe internet

Wondering if anyone else out there has encountered a similar problem when using OneDrive on a Bell Fibe internet service? I have a very fast connection with Bell, the 1 GB/sec service, and everything else I use it for is blazing fast, all except downloading from OneDrive.

Various speed test websites report between 500 - 800 MB/sec download speed. Dropbox and Google drive work like a charm.

I’m able to download from my OneDrive just fine if I tether to my phone, so it seems the problem is OneDrive and Bell not liking each other, often capped out or throttled around 600 kbps and then the download fails shortly after, within a few minutes. This is both over wifi and ethernet LAN connections. Doesn’t seem to make a difference, both are slow and eventually fail. Switch over to tethered internet on my phone (Rogers/Fido) and OneDrive is fast/working normally.

Unfortunately I have no other computer to test this on. I’m on a late 2013 15” Macbook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6

Looking forward to and appreciate any insight as to what the problem could be! Cheers!

Hi Jabijabs,

As this issue is happening only to your particular ISP, this means that OneDrive's datacenter is not throttling your connection to your files.

In this case, we think the best course of action is to contact your ISP (Bell Fibe) to troubleshoot why their connection to the server is being throttled.

Regards,

Sheen

Thanks for reply, Sheen! The first thing I did was contact Bell about the problem. They even went so far as to switch out my modem for another brand new one, to no avail. They then told me to contact Microsoft, that it must be something with their servers, so looks like I’ll be passed back and forth between Bell and Microsoft for the time being. I will get in touch with Bell again and see if they have a more technical department to look into the specifics of this issue. My guess is it’s something to do with ports being blocked on the modem?? Will have to wait on the phones with them some more haha

Hi Jabijabs,

We understand your predicament, we definitely do not want you to be passed back and forth without any resolution, but seeing as OneDrive does not throttle when you are using your phone's internet, it doesn't make sense to say that the issue is with Microsoft's servers.

Other than your modem, it might also be possible that the throttle is caused by the ISP itself. We agree that you might need to find a more technical department to troubleshoot the issue, and provide your test results to show them that the issue is not on OneDrive's end.

Regards,

Sheen

Thanks Sheen, yes, I will contact Bell's technical department about this again, however, I don't want to completely rule out the problem being with Microsoft's servers, considering that all other services I use to download anything else are blazing fast through the Bell ISP - literally everything is super speedy except for Microsoft OneDrive. That's what I don't get and why this issue is so confusing to figure out which end is the bottleneck. I just downloaded a game for my nephew from a Blizzard server at 80 MB per second...27 GB worth of data within minutes! vs OneDrive 600 kbps ..?? Very frustrating.

Hi Jabijabs,

As of right now, there are no Service Incident that mentions slow connection to OneDrive for Business. We agree that the situation might be more complicated than just an issue on either end of the service.

Other than contacting Bell's support, we also suggest making sure that there is no firewall/proxy/antivirus that is blocking the connection to OneDrive.

We would also like to provide you with the full list of URLs and IP addresses that OneDrive and SharePoint Online uses:

Office 365 URLs and IP address ranges

We suggest double-checking that the URL and address ranges are white-listed if you have a firewall.

Regards,

Sheen

I am getting the same issue. I noticed that the personal onedrive is fine  and is only an issue with the business one. I am also on bell with gigabit connection.

I use a VPN and speeds are in 80MB/s while using it without VPN they are re at 600-800kbps

I'm disappointed that neither help desk has suggested you try using the TraceRT, Trace Route, utility.  TraceRT sends a "ping" to the server you are contacting. It tracks how long it takes each contact each intermediate server in the route to the destination.  It can help identify where lags are happening.

Here is an article on the tool. There are LOTS more "How to" articles, "google is your friend":

Great, thanks for sharing your experience, Outrageous! I am also using the Business OneDrive (through work), so I will definitely look into getting a VPN. Hopefully this will help!

Thanks, Rohn! I will do more research on how to use TraceRT to hopefully get to the bottom of this!

OutrageousSky26... Amazing! I just quickly tried out PIA VPN, and it seems to alleviate the throttling issue! Over wifi I'm getting speeds of around 10-12 MB/s... will try out the ethernet later to see if it's any faster. Out of curiosity, which VPN service are you using? Do you find certain VPNs to be faster? I'm near Toronto, Canada if that makes any difference.
