How can I recover my Office License key

Hello,

My situation :

I inherited the management of the IT of a small company (20 PCs), they all have Office 2016 installed and activated.

I have a box of 20 license cards but no way to know which belongs to which PC.

My problem :

I have a PC that needs to re-install the system as it has a lots of corruption and wrong settings.

How can I recover the key that was installed, even if I can get only the latest 5 digits it would be enough, but now, I have tried with Belarc Advisor and it gives me a key that is unknown...

I did try that in the past but ended up needing to buy a new license which is unacceptable so now it is either I can get my License to work or I learn how to do with LibreOffice.

Thanks

Hi Memes,

This will get you the last 5, but I'd be shocked if its different than what belarc found.
Type cmd on the start menu and open the Command prompt when it comes up.
Paste this line in the window (right click to paste)
cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

If you have the 32-bit version, you need to use the 32-bit path for Office:
cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

But... activation shouldn't be a problem even if you use the "wrong" key as long as the key wasn't used for activation recently. But it could cause problems in the future if you activate the same key too many times.

I actually re-installed another one yesterday (yes, the previous admin left a mess...) and I can not activate, even after 3 calls to Microsoft... that is why I am worried. For that one, when it was time to activate, I tried few Licenses one by one until one work, I assumed it was the right one. I'll try as your recommendation.

To start with. MS is doing everything they can to make this process as difficult as possible. It is their not so subtle way of "encouraging" you to "upgrade" to the Office 365 "cash cow" subscription license.

.

You are "supposed" to be able to extract the last 5 char of the product key from the computer using tools like Belarc (there are others). The idea is that you should be able to compare those numbers to your records of the full keys. Where you have recorded the email account, password and computer ID used during the initial install.

.

One reason the numbers could be different is if the original cards do not have the actual product key, but a 27 character "pin" that is used to retrieve the actual 25 character key.

.

Another option you can try is logging in to the MyAccount site, if you know the email account and password used to do the initial install. Did they use a generic "install admin" type account or individual personal accounts. I've heard conflicting reports of whether it works or not.

.

A MS "secret". When dealing with Office activation problems, don't bother wasting time talking to "normal" MS Support. They are even more clueless about activation than they are about "normal" questions.  MS has a separate support team for activation issues. You have to do a "phone activation" to reach them.

.

Activation Phone Support - phone activate

If you have an activation specific error, ie things like “invalid” or “blocked” product key, you specifically have to contact the “phone activation” support reps.  Apparently “normal” support has no way of transferring you to them … <sigh>

 .

The process you need to follow is rather round about:

 .

·    File Menu > Account Command

·    Click on the “About” button

D:\Public\Pictures\2013 Office Phone Activation Wizard.png

·    Copy the Product ID

·    If Office is not already activated, there will be an ‘Activate’ button, click on it

·    Select phone activation option,

·    this will display appropriate phone number for your geographic location.

·    Phone them

·    do NOT reply to initial prompts

·    wait, a long time, until you are offered the option of talking to a “service” rep

·    explain problem to them

·    ask to be transferred to a supervisor when front line support can’t help you

.  *  You have to do a Phone activation

.  *  Phone the Activation support specific phone number (not generic MS Support, they are clueless about activation problems)

.  *  wait for the option to talk to a live service rep (may take a while)

.  *  explain the problem, they should allow the activation to work

2017 01 20- “Telephone activation is no longer supported for your product” error when activating Office – Global List of Activation Support Phone numbers

The problem started in the fall of 2016. In Jan 2017 a MS staffer provided the following excuse. But the problem still exists! MS oops’d, and just hasn’t bothered to fix the problem for much too long.  Go to the link below to get the correct phone number for your specific geographic location

.

·      Click “Activate” button

·      Select “I want to activate the software over the Internet” and click “Next”. This will usually complete successfully and activate the software.

·      If you were unable to automatically activate over the Internet, you may select “I want to activate the software by telephone”

·      “Next.”

The Microsoft Office Activation Wizard will show you three steps:

Step 1: Select your location, this will display the appropriate phone numbers

Step 2: Installation ID (This will be required by the chat/phone support team from you for activation. Please provide it to them immediately)

Step 3: Confirmation ID (This will be provided by support to you.  You need to enter from boxes A to H to proceed with the activation. You may click on Next after entering the ID to complete the activation.

.

PS: this particular mess may not be intentional. Figuring out how to manage Office 2016/2019 onetime payment licenses in a business setting took a while. Like I said, MS made it intentionally awkward.

Hi Mems,  The licence/Product Keys on the Key Cards is the actual Product Key/Licence.  There is no possible way to retrieve them.  They are not stored on the computer and are not available online, and Microsoft will NEVER divulge them.  The Licence Keys are integrated/embedded with the Office Account, created when the Office is first setup.   What you have found using Belarc Advisor is the Actual Product Key for the software (NOT the licence).  This Key can be found on the Office Account at:  https://www.office.com/Myaccount  or https://account.microsoft.com/services/

So sat on any computer you can use Belarc Advisor to see the Product Key for the computer you are using, that is the last five digits of the Key.  What you need to know is the email address and password for the Microsoft Account that was used to setup the Office for the first time.  This is what should have been done when setting-up for the first time: Manage multiple one-time-purchase Office installs that usethe same Microsoft account  See if changing the product key helps, not sure if it does, there is a link on the page.  Microsoft does everything in its power to make people use Office 365!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: When on a computer you open one of the Apps, e.g. Word>File>Account>Top left hand side you should see the email address that the connected Office Account.  If the same email address is used on all the computers all you need to do is figure out what password was used.  You should also see the email address that was used if you go to: http://www.office.com/setup

Reset or recover your Microsoft account password Or: Recover your account

PS See Can I view my product key in Office?

No, you can't. For security reasons, the full product key isn't displayed within Office.

Instead, for Office 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016, you can view the Microsoft account that Office belongs to. This account takes the place of your product key and can be used to reinstall Office from the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and to activate Office.

To view the Microsoft account that Office belongs to, open a document in Word (or any Office app) and go to File > Account. Look for the email address after Belongs to below the product name.

If you bought Office Home & Business, Office Professional, and individual Office apps

Product keys for one-time purchases of Office Home & Business, Office Professional, and individual Office apps are available at the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page. However, you don't need a product key to reinstall or activate these products. If these products are prompting you for a product key, you can sign in using the Microsoft account that you used to buy and download Office.

If you still want to view your product key, here's how:

  1. Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and sign in, if prompted.

  2. Select View product key. Note that this product key won't match the product key shown on an Office product key card or in the Microsoft Store for the same purchase. This is normal.

My product keys don't match

This is normal. The Office product key shown on the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page will always be different than the product key that's shown on a product key card or email receipt. They are two different types of keys, even though they use the same format.
