Buying Energy Mods

Blake in Crimson Caravan, Cliff Briscoe in Novac, and Old Lady Gibson all sell low level energy weapon mods.  Dale Barton in Fortification Hill carries low and medium level mods.  Gloria Van Graff in Silver Rush located in Freeside and the Vendortron at Gun runners sell low, medium, and high level EW mods.

How do you mod a weapon? Is it just like repairing a weapon where if you buy the gun and the mod and hit  Y or is there more to it then that?

It is as simple as that, the Pip-Boy tells you what button to use.  You don't need any particular skills or anything.

Pick up Veronica as a follower and make sure to do all the BoS quests , full rights to their armory is a must for energy weapons users . And once they become friendly the initiates will leave you EW ammo types in a crate by Ramos' office

Remember that flamers are considered energy weapons so expanded tanks count  . The Gatling laser can be modded with focus optics and a  CF frame ,though IMO it's still not worth it's weight . And the Van Graffs usually sell the HS electrode for the plasma caster that can be bought or stolen from them. Unfortunately, there isn't much modding to be done with energy waepons .

The YCS can't be modded but it's the best weapon in the game so far as I'm concerned, especially when paired with overcharges and the meltdown perk. Pure , beautiful, ranged  devastation.

According to the fallout wiki, Alexander (the Gun Runners trader at 188) doesn't sell energy weapon mods.  I've not checked him out personally, so this may be an oversight.

I haven't checked with him in this playthrough admittedly, but I saw him quite a bit in my previous one (I was more focused on guns & HTH combat in that one though).

If you want that Achievement really quickly, why not just buy Varmint Rifles and upgrade those?
