Disc read error after May update - follow up

Kudos Microsoft Support!!!

I recently called your tech support after my disc drive was corrupted by the May update. I was very upfront with the rep and told him that I bought my console used, and that I had opened it to remove dust, this voiding the warranty. He was extremely efficient and patient as I gathered details on my system. I was informed that I would be receiving a pre-paid UPS box to send my old console back. The box never arrived, but I did get an e-mail that I would be getting a new XBOX 360 S 250GB to replace my September/07 Pro. I was worried maybe this was some kind of mistake but sure enough it arrived yesterday, along with a voucher for 12 months of LIVE, even a transfer cable.

I have to say I am exceedingly impressed with Microsoft and the whole XBOX support team. You have a loyal customer for life!!

I have seen some rumours flying around the net that Microsoft is not replacing consoles affected by this issue not true! If your disc drive has been acting funny since mid-May call support! 1-800-4MY-XBOX

Thanks again!

Glad to hear you were taken care of! :)

I just want to clarify, however, a bit of misinformation in your post. The program you are referring to was regarding an earlier update, not the recent May update. You can see this confirmed by an official Microsoft source, Major Nelson, here:

" Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.

The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.

Hope that clears a few things up. "

Hey WaywardFir - We do have to apologize for the frustration in this case. It does sound like you didn't have a good experience.

As far as an "update issue," are you referring to this? http://majornelson.com/2011/05/18/clearing-up-some-confusion/

If so, that error was a very specific error able to be detected over LIVE, and the error would have shown up earlier this year. If your console only recently developed the disc read issue, then it's not the error mentioned in Major Nelson's article, and we would encourage standard disc drive troubleshooting in that case, which can b found here: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/7/t/19.aspx

I can tell you now that got MW3 and the disk error only happens with this game called support and they told me I would have to pay 120.00 to fix the problem that Microsoft started. Thats a bunch of bull! I will throw my Xbox in the trash cancel my xbox live buy a PS3 and be happy again "Xbo360 Support and Microsoft both suck!" I asked about the replacement program and was told that it wasn't true. Microsoft will not replace any systems. I have a old xbox one of the first. Support tried to tell me I bought it in 2008 but I have had it foe atleast 8-9 years I sent it in for ring of death in 2008. Just another Xbox/ Microsoft way of getting out of things that they should take care of. I should send my Xbox in and not pay for it if I am charged. Thats no different than buying a game I can't play and having to pay 120.00 to play it "isn't it"
