A question about connecting to Xbox Live?

My question is kind of hard to explain but here it is: Is it possible to connect the ethernet cable from the xbox into an internet connection port in the wall or do I have to connect the ethernet cable from the xbox to a physical router box thing to the internet connection port in the wall? Basically, do I have to go through the physical router box thing to the wall or can I bypass that and simply plug it into the wall?

Diagram:

Can I do....

Xbox 360 console ---> O (internet connection port in the wall)

Or do I have to do...

Xbox 360 console ---> [.] (physical router box thing) ---# O (internet connection port in the wall)

--> = ethernet cable (blue if that helps)

---# =  different cable that connects from the router box to the wall (I dont know the name of it but its yellow if that helps)

What you are asking for is covering two different types of network connections: Home Residences and Dorms

For a Home residence network setup, it is fairly common to have a modem in place (Which goes into a wall via Cable line). The modem simply provides the service and transfers it to the router. The router itself manages the network and assigns IP addresses to connecting devices/computers/etc, or your Xbox 360 in this case.

If you were in a dorm, plugging it into an ethernet port works because it designed to be connected to a router.

In either case, a modem (with an activated service by a ISP) and routing device are required to be connected online.

How you set it up is up to you, its all i can give based on your post.
