How do I disable mouse touchpad on my Dell laptop in Windows 7

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop.  When I opted for the Yahoo task bar, I was pushed into Yahoo 8.  I wasn't happy, so I switched back to Yahoo 7.  Since then both my mouse pad and the hand mouse have been on simultaneously.  When I go to the Control Panel and click on 'Mouse", I receive the message that it can't open the Synaptic Pointer Device.  What is that? How do I get to it? I just want to turn off the mouse pad and stop my curser from jumping around the screen.  Does anybody know about this and can help?

Hi,

Do you receive the following error message “Unable to connect to the Synaptics pointing device Driver” when you try to open mouse option from the control panel?

Firstly, check if you’re able to open mouse option by clicking on start and typing main.cpl in the start search box and press Enter.

You can also try the steps mentioned below to see if that help you to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Install the Synaptic Touchpad drivers from Dell

The touchpad is missing its synaptic drivers. You need to install the touchpad driver.

Click the link below to download and install the Synaptic touchpad driver for your touchpad.

Download Link:Dell Touchpad / Pointing Stick

Note:
The driver in the link above is compatible for Windows XP/Windows Vista. I couldn’t find the touchpad driver for Dell Vostro 1500 for Windows 7 in the Dell Website. You can contact Dell to get the right driver for your touchpad. Else otherwise, you need to install this driver using program compatibility assistant. In other words, you can install the driver in compatibility mode. Visit the link below to know how to make older programs run in this version of windows.

Once you’ve the right drivers installed for your touchpad, you can follow step 2 on how to disable the touchpad.

Step 2: Procedure you need to follow to disable the touchpad in your Dell laptop

a.    Go to the Control Panel. Under the ‘Hardware and Sound’ options, click ‘Mouse’.

b.    Since you have a Dell laptop, you’ll have a special tab called ‘Dell touchpad’ in the window that pops up. Click on the touchpad picture in the window.

c.    In the new window that appears, click ‘Device Select’.

d.    Click on the ‘Disable’ radio button to disable the touchpad completely. If you want to disable the touchpad of your Dell laptop only when an external device like a mouse is attached, check the last option that says ‘Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present’

Hope this information is helpful and let me know if you need any further assistance.
