DVD/CD will not read any disc using Win 7 Pro 64

Hi,

My DVD/CD IDE drive no longer reads any discs. It shows the drive in both BIOS and Device manager. Device manager says the driver is good. I have uninstalled the driver and let windows reinstall. I have tried looking forupper and lower filters and they are not there. I have checked the power and IDE cables and they are good, I have done all of the things listed in the many forums and nothing works, changed drive letter, uninstalled Nero, Restored to a spot when it did read discs.

I am unable to boot from the drive. Which is very scary because I can't even reinstall windows. When I do the F8 thing to boot from the DVD drive it shows the drive so I select it and it then boots from my hard drive.

When I insert a disc into the drive the light comes on for a moment or two and then the door opens and I get the error message saying to insert a disc.

The drive was working a few days ago but stopped after doing the latest microsoft updates. My BIOS is the most current.

I tried going into gpedit.msc user config\admin template\windows components\windows explorer\remove CD burn features\ enabled, disabled, not configured (default)

I used Mr. Fixit's Mats_Run.dvd and it shows the problem but is unable to fix it.

I spoke to Geek Squad they said to delete the upper and lower filters but they do not exist. They also said buying a new drive will not solve the issue.

I am at a loss please help. Please do not respond with the generic list of things to try as I have done them.

I will try installing another drive but since there is no filter listed I doubt it will work.

HI Rob,

Thank you again for trying to help me it is appreciated.

I solved my issue by purchasing another drive. So it was what I 1st suspected, that the drive had just failed. I did not go out and buy another right off because of all of the changes I had done to my PC this last week. I had suspected it was a problem with me cloning my hard drive or because I had restored windows to a prior restore point. Though restoring to a prior restore point has caused more issues than it was worth. I now get errors when I open MS Word 7 and Yahoo messenger will not work anymore at all even if I uninstall it and reinstall it. I get an error message saying PCIMAN32.dll is missing or corrupted. I get this message when I open word 7 and when I try to open Yahoo messenger. Word will open but Yahoo will not.

Because of the research I had done (about 12 hours) on forums and talking to techs I assumed it was a registry issue. Almost all had said replacing the DVD would not solve the issue.

I had called Sony's tech support and after being on hold for 2 hours I was finally able to talk to someone. That someone seemed more interested in my mailing address, phone number, what software I used, and my email address than what my actual issue was. All I wanted from them was what my registry should look like for the drive to work properly and I never did get that. All I got was that they would look into it and contact me later.

So a word of advise to prospective SONY customers. "Just say no to Sony." Their customer service is atrocious. I speak from past experience as well as recent. OMG 2 hours just to give them my personal information.

So back to reinstalling windows again (yuck) which is what cloning my hard drive from a test hard drive was supposed to prevent me needing to do. I had installed windows on a test hard drive to test if the drive I had been using was causing random BSOD's. The BSOD's I HAD (past tense) been experiencing was because of my trying to use 8GB of 1066 ram in a AM2+ board and CPU.

As for windows 7 I do like the OS and feel it is as stable if not more stable than XP. It also has much more functionality than prior OS offerings from MS. I never tried Vista as I had heard it was not very good at being downward compatible and because it seems that MS likes to put a bad OS in between their good OS's Like 200, Milena, and all the other junk OS's that were offered between Win 98 and XP. Just my 2 cents.

My favorite pastime is bad mouthing Microsoft but in all fairness MS has done a good job at helping the world connect.
