KB3135173 will not install on my Win 10 Home either. First time in my experience that I have ever had any problem with any install of updates on any of my machines.
I am running Windows 10 on 9 different machines currently, and this is only one of two that is not running a Fast Ring Preview Version. This is my "home" machine, and I am also running a release version at my office. Both my office and home were on Version
1511, OS Build 10586.71).
Both machines are identical (I just built them both about 5 months ago). I've never had any issues with either machine, and Updates have installed without incident prior to this.
My office computer ran the Cumulative Update just fine and it installed on 2/9/16. Later that day, I came home and saw the same update was available on my home computer, awaiting a restart. So I did the restart.....and it refused to install. Windows
begins the restart process and the Cumulative Update begins to install....First it gets to 35% and then reboots, and then restarts again, and the update reports it is installing 66%, 77%, then 88%....and then it balks, and refuses to install any further.
Unlike others here, my system does not freeze. Instead, the screen immediately switches to a new statement: "We couldn't install updates", and it then proceeds to announce that it will "undo any changes made". The computer then reboots in a seemingly
normal fashion, and when logged back into my account, everything works just as before. And if the Cumulative Update isn't hidden (see below) Windows Update re-downloads the same KB3135173 Cumulative Update and the whole process starts all over again.
I have done this now (based on my update history) at least 7 times, with the same results each time. I have tried doing a system restore to an earlier point, I've run the troubleshooter, I've run Msert (the MS security scanner), I've run Norton Power
Eraser; I've tried to install the Cumulative Update directly from the MS Update Download Center site (installing it manually); I've turned off all antivirus and malware protection and tried to install it.....Nothing works, and in short, I've tried every fix
mentioned here on the forums. It just will not install.
So I will remain stuck at 10596.71, and will wait until MS decides to put out a fix for KB3135173.
I see that several people have suggested that if all else fails, one should either do a reinstall of Win 10, or do a "Reset" (saving files and data)..... I am not going to do either one. ....No way, no how. I am not going to waste my time reinstalling
apps, or reinstalling the entire OS. I am not a guinea pig for MS. So I'm just not gonna do it.
If MS wants to force updates, they can damn well fix them if they don't install.. And based on what I've been reading here and elsewhere, a lot of people are having the same or similar problem to the one I am experiencing.
For now, the only solution I can come up with is to hide Cumulative Update KB3135173 (using Windows ShowHide), and wait until MS either fixes this update, or comes out with the next Cumulative Update.
FIX THE DAMN OS and the UPDATES.....PLEASE.
