Windows 10 & LPT Parallel Printer Port.

My computer uses a Gigabyte GA-EP43T-UD3L Rev 1.00 motherboard with F8 BIOS, fitted with an Intel 3.15 gigahertz Core2 Duo processor and 4 GB of memory.  Windows 7 Ultimate and my peripherals have worked perfectly since 2010.  I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on 13th November and have managed to get my peripherals working with the exception of my ancient HP DeskJet 610C printer on the LPT1 parallel port.  After numerous uninstalls and re-installs I found that the problem was connected with the integral LPT port.  When I click on print in Word I first received the error: ‘Error Printing on the HP DeskJet 610C’.  If I attempt to print a second time I receive the error: ‘Printer in an error state’.  If I now open ‘Device Manager’, ‘Ports’, ‘Printer Port (LPT1)’ and change practically any of the settings then close Device Manager the printer works normally and continues to do so until I shut down and re-start my computer.

I have tried uninstalling the LPT driver and re-starting with still the same results.

I have also tried uninstalling the LPT driver, changing the settings from SPP in the BIOS and re-starting with exactly the same result each time.

Any help would be most welcome.

David.

You cannot run the old printer on windows 10 unless there are windows 10 drivers available from HP. Check with HP

mlg63.

The HP website says that the printer will work with the Windows driver.

The problem would appear to be with the LPT port driver and not the printer driver.

Mohammed AilAli,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I tried method 1 with no change.

I then went to method 2 and received these results:

1)

2)

3)

4)

5)

6)

I then connected the printer to a computer running Windows 7Pro which prints without a problem and did the same tests.  The results were the same EXCPT that 3) HP Network Devices Support Properties was NOT present.

As I said earlier I think the problem is with the driver for the LPT port and NOT the printer driver.

I hope this is of help to you in solving the problem.

I am not the only one having this problem.  In another post the same is reported and NOT with an HP printer.

Regards,

David.

Same problem here.  The new 1511 update breaks all parallel port functionality.  Any fixes only last until PC is rebooted, then broke again.  Sad that the people responding to these threads have no knowledge of real problems and just parrot worthless canned replies.  You might just assume that someone using old parallel port devices might -- just might -- have a LOT of experience troubleshooting these problems, and any problems that we post are REAL BUGS that need to be fixed by Microsoft.

For now, I solved the problem by using usb-to-parallel adapters that I had available (I assumed this problem would eventually occur, so I planned ahead.)  Printing works normally and continues to work after reboot.  This obviously bypasses using the real parallel ports, so that's why it works.

That said, I am not happy with Windows 10.  Not happy with this unannounced breaking of parallel ports.  Not happy with the overall buggy Win10 experience.

Hello

I have an HP 4100 I have always used LPT1, it worked fine in XP, windows 7, windows 8, 8.1 and windows 10 pro before the last update 3 days ago. I is not a printer problem it is an LPT1 problem inside of this last patch.

I do see LPT1 in device manager and I do see HP4100 in device manager, I can print to network printer buy not to LPT1..

Mike,

1) Open Device Manager:

2) Click on 'Ports (Com & LPT)

3) Click on Printer Port (LPT1).

4) Click on virtually any heading, for example 'Port Settings'.

5) Change the Filter Resources Method, for example to 'Use any interrupt assigned to the port'.

6) Close the Device Manager.

Next time it will probably still be in  'Use any interrupt assigned to the port'  just change it back to 'Try not to use an interrupt'.

This works for me.

I hope this helps.

David.

No, doesn't help, because the problem is a bug introduced with the new 1511 Win10 update.  You can get the printer to work temporarily (only until next reboot).

Actually, I hope that it is a bug, and not MS intentionally ripping out parallel/legacy support.  There had been rumors of removing legacy port support ever since before Windows 2000 was released.  They backed off and have supported "legacy" (at least partially) until now.  I say PARTIALLY because starting with Win7, they removed Twain/WIA for legacy devices.  Vista SP2 was the last MS OS to have real full support for legacy.

mlg63, Please if you don't know don't answer.

I have been using HP4100 since XP yes XP, also same printer in windows 7, pro 8, pro 8.1 pro and windows 10 before the last update 1511. so you are wrong 100%. It is a Microsoft screw up in the last update. Now go back to the IT guys at Microsoft and have them fix it. PLEASE

Mike

Had the same problem

Not used printer since the latest update

Not working on LTP1

Tried all sorts until I got to this page

I simply went back to a previous build and now works fine

Tempted to go back to W7 but I read that it is not possible without a clean install

No more updates for me!
