Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter error Code 10 under Device Manager

Original Title: Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter

I recently downloaded Rocksmith 2014 and I played on it for a solid three hours and then I stopped. Later, when I came back to it I plugged in my cable but the game didn't see that the cable was plugged in. I went to my devices and saw that the cable needed troubleshooting so I did it and it didn't work. It says that there is a problem with the driver. When I look at the properties for the device it shows a Code 10 and says that the device cannot start. It also says the I/O request was canceled. I've had this cable for a year since the first Rocksmith came out and it worked fine on my Xbox 360 as well. What should I do? I've already contacted Ubisoft and here is how far we've gotten, starting from the bottom: (I'm bronaconda13)

I tried both of those things and neither of them worked. I have found that if I open the device manager and the list of devices under Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers and I uninstall the device from the device manager and remove the device from the other list of devices, unplug the cable, and plug it back in, the name changes between those three. I've gotten it to say Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter and I've left it there.

There is no Real Tone cable driver. Rocksmith uses the generic USB microphone driver that is part of the DirectX Runtime package which gets installed on the initial RS Steam install. If that device is not being recognized, it is a Windows issue that we do not have direct control over. Try installing the DirectX Runtime from this link http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 and see if that solves the problem. If that link is not valid, visit www.microsoft.com and search for ‘DirectX End-User Runtime’ to download the installer from their site. You can also try these steps: 1. Open the Device Manager. 2. Find the entry for "Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter." It can generally be found under the "Sound, video and game controllers" entry but may be in another location, depending on your PC. 3. Right-click "Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter." 4. Select "Uninstall." 5. Wait a few moments, then right-click the list and select "Scan for hardware changes."

Basically, it sounds like you fall under c), which means that you will need to reinstall the Windows drivers. The problem is, I don't have direct links for those drivers and I would be wary of what you find via Google. I have reported your case to the Rocksmith team to see if they can shed some light on this issue for us. I will keep you posted. Thanks!

Its also labeled as hocksmit every once in a while besides those other two names

It still works on my 360. In the device manager it says USB Audio Device but I have seen it say Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter. It switches every once in a while if I keep unplugging it and plugging it back in. When I look at the properties of the device in the device manager it says This device cannot start (Code 10) The I/O request was canceled.

Sorry for the delay. We are backed up this time of year. Does your cable still work successfully on the 360? That would point us towards whether or not the cable itself is corrupt or if the issue is with Windows. There are no independent Real Tone Cable drivers. They use generic Windows drivers. Here is some troubleshooting that I received from the cable manufacturer: Open Windows device manager, and check the “Sound, video and game controllers” section. a) If “Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter” is displayed neither in “Sound, video and game controllers” nor in “other devices” section, then it may be a hardware issue (defective Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter) or USB issue (enumeration issue on the USB port, power supply shortage on the USB port, …) b) If “Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter” is displayed with an exclamation mark, in “other devices” or in “Sound, video and game controllers” section, then it may be a driver issue. c) If “Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter” is displayed with no exclamation mark in the “Sound, video and game controllers” section, the issue in Rocksmith has probably another origin than the driver or the hardware. If “Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter” is displayed with an exclamation mark, in “other devices” or in “Sound, video and game controllers” section, then it can be a driver issue. A possible explanation may be that an issue during the previous installation of another USB audio device (as USB webcams, USB microphone, USB headset) has altered, deleted or renamed Microsoft USB audio driver, making it not possible for new USB audio devices to connect to Microsoft USB audio driver afterwards. The drivers files which are changed may be - usbaudio.sys (in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\), - wdma_usb.inf (in c:\Windows\Windows32\Inf\ and C:\Windows\inf\) and the solution would be to re-install these drivers.

Hi Ian,

I appreciate the efforts which you have put to try and fix the issue till now.

1) Is this issue specific to Rocksmith USB Guitar? Are you able to use other USB devices on the computer?

2) Are you using Windows 8.1 Preview on Windows 8.1?

As per the information regarding the Direct-X End User Runtime Installer is concerned, Windows 8.1 has the latest Direct-X 11.2 as the default version. Refer to the link to get the details:

Refer to the section "For more information":

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113/en-us

Code 10 error code for a specific device under Device, in spite of reinstalling or updating drivers, might occur device configuration issues. The Code 10 error is mainly related to hardware and device driver issues or to compatibility issues between hardware drivers and additional software that is installed in Windows.

As far as compatibility of the device is concerned, it is not compatible with Windows 8.1. Refer to the link to get the details on Windows Compatibility center:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Name=Rocksmith%20Learn%20To%20Play%20Guitar%20And%20Bass&vendor=Ubisoft&Locale=1033%2C2057%2C3081%2C4105%2C16393&BreadCrumbPath=Rocksmith%20guitar&LastSearchTerm=Rocksmith%2Bguitar&Type=Software&tempOsid=Windows%208.1

It solely depends on the device manufacturer in such cases when the device is not compatible with the operating system. However, you can follow the steps mentioned in the link and check if resetting the corrupt registry entries for the device fixes the issue.

Refer to the section “Common resolutions for Code 10 error” and then “Troubleshooting methods for Code 10 error

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/en-us

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, you can refer to the following steps to back the registry files on the computer:

a)            Press Windows and R key to open the run box.

b)            Type ‘regedit’ and press Enter from the keyboard.

c)            Open the file option on the menu bar.

d)            Click on Export and save the file with a name on the desktop.

If you want to restore the file, you can do so by double clicking the file that you have saved on the desktop.

Please let us know about the results. We will be glad to assist you further.

Other USB devices do work on my computer and I'm pretty sure I'm running 8.1 and not 8.1 Preview. I'm just a little bit confused because if the device wasn't compatible with 8.1 then how come I used it for a few hours before it stopped working? I tried doing the troubleshooting for the code 10 error but it didn't work.

Hi Ian,

As you have mentioned that other USB device work apart from Rocksmith USB Guitar, this issue is confined to it.

Also, as their manufacturer mentioned that the drivers are related to Windows Generic driver, check if installing pending updates offered from Windows Update fixes the issue. Pending updates might have optional updates related to the device drivers. Refer to the link to check for update:

Refer to the link to do so:

Refer to the section “Do I need to check for updates?”

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/windows-update-faq

If that does not fix the issue and you have mentioned that the issue occured recently, you can restore the computer to a point prior to this issue. Refer to the link to do a System Restore:

Follow the section “Restore your PC to an earlier point in time

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

Check if the issue is still there.

Do let us know about the results.

My OG (short for OriGinal) rocksmith cable (not a 2014 cable) worked fine on my old windows 7 machine, but when I bought a new rig which runs windows 8 I started getting this 'hocksmit error code 10' PITA issue. So I surfed the many forums on the problem, and tried everything in various orders including:

installing and/or uninstalling asio4all
using usb 2.0 or 3.0 ports
plugging and unlpugging repeatedly
resetting the computer
installing/uninstalling drivers (there is no rocksmith specific driver you can download, btw)
turning the volume all the way up in recording devices (couldn't actually do this one since the microphone wouldn't even appear under recording devices, but I turned up the other which obviously didn't work - hey, I was desperate to play ;-)
Disabling xhci in bios (which doesn't actually exist as an option in my version of 8.1 at least - I could only enable or disable specific usb ports)
ordering a new rocksmith 2014 cable (it hasn't arrived yet so idk if it will work or not)

I also called Ubisoft customer service and walked through various steps with them.

I tried all of these things in multiple orders over the span of a couple of weeks and nothing worked. I think a lot of the fixes people have posted may have just been the last thing they did before it randomly decided to not be broken once so people prematurely posted these solutions as fixes, or maybe they had different setups, or there may be multiple valid fixes, or what have you.

One fix that kept coming up for the OG rocksmith cable was this idea that there wasn't enough power to the USB port. That sounded obviously wrong for my case because I just bought a new high end PC and the ports get something like 500(whatever the power measurement is) to each port, and the cable requires far less than that. maybe 100 or something.

Anyway, here's what actually worked for me despite my previous misgivings about getting enough power to the ports:

I went out and bought a powered USB 2.0 hub for about 20 bucks at best buy. Now it works. I've tested it multiple times using different ports (only usb 2.0 though - want to save the 3.0s for when I need speed), restarted my machine, and all of that actual testing that one should do before posting a fix.

I'm running windows 8.1, and using a cable from the original rocksmith, not a 2014 cable.
