Surface Pro 2 crashes and reboots when turning on from sleep

Firstly, please don't merge this post into this thread again. These are obviously different issues. His issue is that his surface wouldn't turn on until letting it set all night, this issue is that the Surface crashes upon attempting to turn on from sleep. Two DIFFERENT problems with the same buggy device!

---

Ever since the Surface Pro 2 was released this has been an issue for a lot of people:

Basically when our device is in sleep and you hit the power button, sometimes it does a silent crash and reboot, the entire process is annoying and takes a long time.

People call this one the "black screen of death" -- hah. I think in event viewer it shows up as kernel-power or kernel-general.

Anyway this has been a bug for months and months and is beyond frustrating, please fix it!

Thank you for posting to us, I understand your frustration. When your Surface goes into sleep mode, and you go to wake it, do you get the Black Screen and the Windows button continues to vibrate when pushed?

At least for me, not anymore.

The fans just spin at full speed for a few seconds, then the tablet turns itself off.

After turning it on again, it shows in Event Viewer Error ID41 Kernel-Power.

I have been having this issue for awhile now and I've tried multiple fixes. Recently, I browsed around in Device Manager and discovered that Windows was not updating the network adapter drivers automatically. Once I manually updated these drivers my surface has been working perfectly. Again, if you have not tried this yet, go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > right click the adapter and update driver. This issue could simply be due to a driver not self-updating. Hope this helps.

What's the latest available version for the WiFi Drivers?

Update: Ok, I was indeed using an old version. Somehow Windows update wont get me the latest version of the drivers but rather v 14.69.24039.134

After manually installing the October WiFi drivers (14.69.24044.150), the Surface reverts back this old version.

I just uninstalled the drivers and deleted them. Reinstalled the October drivers (manually). And it sticks now.

I read the version 14.69.24049.160 is already available... but sadly, those are nowhere to be downloaded.

Lets see if this completely fixes the ID41 error when resuming from sleep. (Which does not happen often after Jan. Update)

Ok I hope this helps. Also, after updating my network adapter I noticed my display driver was also out of date so I updated this as well, it might be a good idea to check your others drivers while you're at it. Since I have done this I have not had any issues with waking up from sleep, although it could be a coincidence with the new patch.

I had this problem on a daily basis.

For me it has been solved.

The process was shutting down, then holding the volume up button down and then the power button down for a full 20 seconds.

A few days later I installed the January firmware.

It has now been a week with no crash on wakeup from sleep.

I know this is not a fix for every person, but it did fix it for me - and I am very happy about it :)

Maybe give it a go if you haven't already tried.

I also have the .160 WiFi driver installed.

Im using the latests Intel HD Drivers from Intels download center.

My Surface is still crashing when coming out of Sleep, and I just cant for my life find the .160 WiFi drivers.

Downloading and installing all newest drivers...

will report as soon as I test everything.

Report: Wifi drivers are the same. Wonder if there are just 2 variants of the wifi chip. Updated other drivers that were not being updated automatically. lets see how this goes.

Yes, this describes my problem exactly... it does it whether I sleep or hibernate the tablet.  What is the solution?

I have all the latest drivers installed from the complete driver pack MS just released a couple weeks ago and a fresh install of windows, as well as all February updates.  Nothing has helped, its driving me insane. Only way to get device running again is hold volume and power button to reboot.

Edit: Where are these .160 WiFi drivers found? I have the .150 installed that I got from the driver pack linked above but already had those... where might I find the .160? Thanks

Edit 2:  From a bit of research it seems .160 drivers were only released for the SP1, not the SP2?

My Surface Pro 2 is crashing daily with this issue. Really annoying to have.

Tried the volume up + power button after shutting down, then restarted. Will report back if it has any effect.

EDIT: still crashing after the reset operation.
