Thank you for your Skype Feedback…keep it coming!

Thank you to every Skype user that has taken time to share feedback with us. Your opinion matters deeply and helps drive our priorities forward. We are committed to making Skype the best and most powerful communication platform out there for connecting work groups, families, friends and classrooms around the world.

Calling, Messaging and Sign-in improvements are the top priority

Calling and messaging are the foundation of Skype. We believe every single call and message must be reliable and performant, as these are your lifelines to family, friends and co-workers throughout the day. Guided by customer feedback, we continually investigate reported issues in the fundamental areas to ensure:

  • Sign in is simple and it’s okay if you forget your password. We’ll help you sign back in!
  • Calls are clear and the video flawless, whether there are 2 or 20 people on the call.
  • Messages send quickly and reliably, wherever you are.
  • It is easy to manage your contacts; the ones you want to keep around and those you want to block.

Continued focus on a few key features missing from the new Skype

There were few key features we did not finish adding to new Skype (version 8+) in time for the larger product rollouts. We are committed to bring the following features to the new Skype and will provide status updates along the way.

  • Split window view for Skype on Windows 10, so you can see multiple chat windows at the same time
  • Changing the font size in a chat
  • Search for a message within a chat
  • Status improvements – how others see your online status
  • Privacy settings (call contact configurations) – more controls regarding who can call you
  • Making it easier to add a phone number as a contact

While the majority of our focus is on fundamentals and missing features, we’ve started rolling out a few highly requested features. One example is call recording functionality, which has been a very common ask from work groups, as well as teachers conducting Skype in Classroom sessions. In addition, this past week we were excited to start rolling out SMS Connect to Insiders. SMS Connect will let you read and reply to Android SMS messages from your PC. This has been a long-awaited feature by many. We’ll first gather feedback from Insiders, then roll out the feature broadly to everyone.

That latest Skype Preview for Android seems to have lost the SMS Connect feature under Settings - - - >Messaging. Is this on purpose?

I just wanted to thank you for listening to our feedback and keeping Skype 7.4 in service. I experienced complete apathy in response to my first complaints about the lack of split screen about a year ago. This new stance is promising. Thank you.

I am using the UWP (store) version of skype which is on version 12.x Why have all these versions? skype desktop, skype from store, skype for business (lync) etc. Why not just one good UWP version? So it's the same on my mobile (Lumia 950) and on my desktop?

You'll note that in the UWP version there's a secondary version in the 8.x range to align with it. I suppose they could do away with the 12.x/14.x numbers easily enough, but it probably makes sense to have in the context of what it is.

I thought everyone was on 14.x now though. That had been the Preview (beta) version only for a while, but I could have sworn I've seen others saying it's v14 now. Maybe for Insiders only for now?  Anyway, it'll be 14.x soon, and when you're on it you'll see that it looks much more like desktop and mobile, especially Settings.

Skype for Business has no relation at all to consumer Skypes, so it wouldn't make sense for its version to align. It's going away anyway.

I use Skype as my primary phone, on the desktop. It is essential for me to have Skype ring through the desktop speakers, and when picking up a call use the headset for listening/speaking. I also need to be able to change my status from "Online" to "Do not disturb", so that I can silence Skype when I am in a meeting here in my office. I also use TalkHelper to record my sessions and hope that this functionality will remain.

UWP Skype (v12 I think) is still not too bad compared to React Native Skype IMO. Why would they not use UWP+Xaramin or something?

Or why React Native Skype doesn't even have the little preview window for call when out of focus.

My biggest issue with it is the image viewer-- close button on top left!? This is Windows. Please get that (to the) right!

Xamarin/.Net is toast when it comes to MS's communications clients (Skype, Teams), so that's out. And you're in for a surprise when you get on v14, since it's now React Native too, like mobile and Skype 8 (which is aided by Electron). It's a React Native world now in Redmond.

The left close button (now in v14 too), which you can also see in Settings, is mind-boggling but surely something inherited from the mobile UI world somehow, though I can't think of exactly how.
