Setup exchange email account in office 365 keeps asking for password

I just got a new computer and installed Office 365; in Outlook I added a Yahoo and Outlook email accounts no problem, but when trying to add a new Exchange email account and Outlook does the autodiscovery, it finds the domain, ask for the password and keeps reverting back saying the password is wrong.

The same account in my previous computer also was a headache to setup, same type of issue - this was with Office 2016 - but ultimately I was able to do it since it gave the option to tweak the settings. Apparently 365 does not give the chance to tweak anything

I just updated Office as someone recommended and still the same

Any ideas how to complete the setup?

Thanks

HBJ

Hello HBenJim, my name is Wendy Jones, I am an Independent Advisor.
This can be an autodiscover issue. To solved, follow the steps below:
1. Open a cmd as admin and executed: nslookup -type=cname autodiscover.domain.com
You should received an answer as:
autodiscover.domain.com
canonical name = autodiscover. outlook.com
2. Acces to regedit on the following route: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover
At the right panel, create three news DWORD 32 with these characteristics:
• PreferLocalXML                      Value “0”
• ExcludeHttpsRootDomain    Value “1”
• ExcludeScpLookup                  Value “1”
3. Execute the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365
Download from: https://diagnostics.office.com/#/?env=Prod
At the execution point, select Outlook\Outlook ask about credentials.
At the end of this process this tool will give you the error or the Outlook profile will be create succesful.
Let me know about results. I will be glad to help you. Good luck!!

Hello Wendy,

Thanks for your reply.

I need more assistance though.

1. The syntax for the CMD is not working for me

After typing nslookup, I have tried different lines such as

nslookup CNAME autodiscover.yyy.com (yyy being the domain of my work server)

nslookup CNAME autodiscover.outlook.com

nslookup =cname autodiscover.yyy.com

The only one that appears to work is this one

nslookup autodiscover.yyy.com

and this is the output

Server:  autodiscover.****
Address:  92.242.140.2

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Request to autodiscover.yyy.com timed-out

2.  On the Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover

I Had to create the Autodiscover Key as it did not show up

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Autodiscover

I added the 3 new entries

I ran the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365

The it takes me to the login where after a couple of screens, it ends up with the same:

Enter password

Your account or password is incorrect. If you don't remember your password, reset it now

Would you please advise on where I went wrong?

thank you

Do you have access to this email account by web right?
Execute an Office online repair please as show the following link: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/repair...
Access to the affected machine using another Windows profile, then create a new Outlook profile and let me know if the issue still persist.

Did the online repair

Created new user on the same PC, and tried to create new account in Outlook.

Same issue, password is not recognized.

You can set the account up using the profile manager - aka control panel, mail - to access the old dialog.  You can access the profile manager using the /manageprofiles switch. (it's also on File, Account Settings menu if outlook is open.)

To use the /manageprofiles switch, right-click on the Start button and choose Run or press Windows key + R to open the Run command.

Type or paste the following into the Open field and press Enter or click OK to restart Outlook. (There is a space before /.)

 outlook.exe /manageprofiles

Click Profiles to create a new profile or Email accounts to view or edit your account if you only have one profile.

Wendy / Diane

Thank you both for your support

I do have OWA access

I can connect via the Mail app

Resetting the password does not seem to be an option, it tells me my user ID is not valid

I was able to try thru profiles, and entered the server info. Same result

Did not mention before, this is a new install of both Office and Windows, if that makes a difference. I say it because I seem to been having trouble keeping the machine visible to other devices in the same network, and wonder if there is a relationship

Thanks

This is an on-prem exchange server account? Is your office software activated in an office 365 account that uses the same email address?

This is a weird error (not that you needed to change the password) - your account should be valid.

It could be the related to the networking problems - outlook definitely can't add the account if it can't find it, but you should get a different error message.
