Release Preview: 14393.222 CU Available (and possible issue installing)

There is a new update for Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194496).

This brings you to build 14393.222. This is only available if you are an insider that has release preview.

Update October 6, 2016: Official Fix

Microsoft has issued an official script here that will fix this problem.  The previous workarounds are still listed below.

Previous Workaround Solutions

If it cannot install the update and rolls back (you'll see "undoing changes..." followed by another reboot), here are verified solutions:

  1. Bypass Windows Update by installing the latest version directly [Simple]
Solution posted by Sean8102 on October 1st (page 16)
Go to the Get Windows 10 webpage and click download tool now.  When you run the tool, select "Upgrade This PC Now" and choose to keep everything (files, apps, and settings).  This will apply the update directly without impacting any of your installed programs at all.  You can also use the tool to create a bootable USB stick and install from that, but no USB stick is necessary if you use the "Upgrade This PC Now" option.

  2. Remove Tasks and Registry for Tasks that that Block The Update [Advanced]
Solution posted by TomislavRex on October 3rd (page 23 with additional details on page 29)
Deleted all references to task  \Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTask in the System32 folder, AND all traces of them from the registry (in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache tree.  Noted that deleting some of these involved changing ownership of the keys. The tasks have been recreated during the installation of the update.

For those people, who (like me) failed to use the MediaCreationTool, "sfc /scannow" continuously asking you to reboot, DISM "/AnalyzeComponentStore" and "/ScanHealth" fails with "hresult=0x8000ffff". A possible solution:

  1. Check "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" folder for "Unserviceable" key. It should be "0". Note: Changing it from "1" to "0" means that you are aware of inconsistencies that may brake your OS after subsequent actions.
  2. Go to "C:\Windows\WinSxS\" and look for pending.xml file. If it's there - take ownership of it and move somewhere else. Note: You might loose some vital pending changes.
  3. Some people say that there could be pending operations in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackagesPending" and you need to remove everything in this folder, but that wasn't my case so I cannot confirm
  4. Reboot
  5. Try sfc and DISM

For those ppl, who (like myself) couldn't install the kb3194496.cab file (fails on 99% and rollbacks) after removing the traces of XblGameSave task from TaskScheduler and registry. A strange tip:

  1. Go to "C:\Windows\WinSxS\" and make sure that you don't have the "amd64_windows-gaming-xbox..e-service-component_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.206_none_8d69e9ef51b61cf1" folder. This folder is a part of KB3194496 and it caused the update to fail and rollback in my case. Take ownership and move it to another folder.
  2. For your particular case you might need to look through "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" (or CbsPersist_*.log) for "Failure will not be ignored" string.

I know, it's a weird and risky advises, but that what fixed my exotic case.

Another confirmation that the XBOX task removal allowed the update to install.

Will you be rolling that script into Windows Update so that the many impacted systems by non-technical users will benefit?  Or will it be something they need to search out and download separately?

I would be concerned about having so many unreported unpatched systems around the world.

All I did is looking at logs by other users.

Happy to hear it has solved the issue, but to be honest, "Access Denied" in windows setup/update? and even running in kernel mode? I cannot understand how they managed to do that.

Thanks all. FINALLY got it to work for me following the footsteps of others who have gone down this path:

  • delete folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave
  • delete registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\XblGameSave
  • Re-run the update

Tried all the other methods that were suggested by others and they did not work for me. This was some fun figuring this all out. NOT!!!

Thank you this worked for me too after a minimal of 10 attemps from the windows update.

I wrote a simple batch file to automate the repair process to apply this update as I, like many others here, have many machines that I manage. This batch file also automatically installs the update if you have downloaded the update cab file from Microsoft's site and run the bat file from the same directory that the update cab is located. Otherwise, simply re-run Windows Update.  I have tested this script on six systems that have suffered this same problem. I hope this helps you guys.

REQUIREMENT: This batch file requires the program "SetACL.exe" to take ownership of certain registry keys. Google SetACL and download if you do not already have this tool. Place SetACL.exe into same directory as batch file.

Copy the following code into "FixUpdate.bat"  and run as administrator:

@echo off
echo 1) Applying SetACL.exe to take ownership of affected registry keys and set full control to Administrators group

Hi. All sounds great you figure it out what happen. What happen to me is over night it did the update. I was on 14393. The next morning my PC won't boot at all  I cant reset it I cant do a restore nothing I have tried sfc, Dism the only thing I have is a command prompt. X:\windows\system32>. I have tried to boot from the USB 14393.222. It boots up just fine gives me the options to update or clean install. which started to look good but when I clicked on update of course you have to boot from GUI. So at this point not sure ware to go from here clean install I guess would be my last option.  Thanks any help would be much appreciated...
