Hi,

Thank you for being a part of Windows 10 Technical Preview testing.

1. How are you trying to install Windows 10?
2. Are you trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or clean install through ISO?

I would suggest you to create a bootable media and perform clean install.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Windows 10 Insider Preview.

I understand that you are unable to install Windows 10 over Windows 7 and getting 0xc1900101 - 0x40017, while trying to install it.

I appreciate for the troubleshooting steps that you have taken to resolve the issue.

Please get back to us with the following information so that we can help you further:

  1. What is the make and model of the computer you are facing issues with?
  2. Have you installed any 3rd party Antivirus Software?
  3. Are you performing a clean install with a Windows 10 ISO or are you performing an upgrade?

I suggest you to follow the steps below and see if it helps:

Uninstall Antivirus

This could be an issue with Antivirus blocking some features of windows. Sometimes even disabling the Antivirus doesn’t work so we may have to remove them completely.

Refer to the article below:

How do I uninstall antivirus or antispyware programs?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/How-do-I-uninstall-antivirus-or-antispyware-programs

Note: If you are using paid license for the antivirus, please keep license key of the Antivirus safe with you so that if you want to reinstall it again you can use the same key. If you cannot find the license key I suggest you to contact Antivirus support team to help you get the license key for Antivirus.

Important: Antivirus software helps protecting your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable or uninstall your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable or uninstall it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer

I suggest you to remove any devices that are connected to the computer and see if the issue persists after that.

You may also follow the suggestions provided by Andre Da Costa in the following article:

Hope this helps, do let us know if you need further assistance with Windows.

Have the same problem here.  I have a Win7 Professional evaluation install in a Virtualbox VM.  In this I have installed various apps (Firefox, Google Chrome, Skype, a couple old Quicken versions, ccleaner, etc) to make it look like an actual running system (not just some factory default install).  No AV or firewall installed.

I already have the Win10 build 10130 ISO (as you listed above), and try kicking off the upgrade.  Tried a few times, seeing if there were services I could disable, even tried the FixIt in KB971058.  Nothing makes this work

I'm not at all comfortable with upgrading a running system to Win10 unless I can do some test run-throughs first, as I am sure there are plenty of other people who want to test this.  Barring that, I would have to postpone or forego updating any systems I maintain (for that matter, I could probably convince my brother to just start using the Linux partitions on his machines).

So I tried it this time by first uninstalling the virtualbox guest additions, then running the Win10 update after rebooting.  STILL fails.  So it's not a problem with the guest additions.

What happens is the setup will extract all it's files, then once it reboots, it **FOREVER** gets stuck at the crooked-blue-window logo (the only thing in the screen).  The only option at this point is to reset the VM, at which time the install backs out with the install error in the original post.

At this stage, I don't see that I will EVER be upgrading any machines I manage to Win10, because I simply will not have time to sit and babysit the Wiin10 update (at this point can't call it an "upgrade"), and then spend the next 2 days re-constructing the system if it fails.  At most I would have 3 hours to update a machine and get it back up and usable; if I cannot verify that is doable, then I absolutely will not be updating *anybody's* machines.  And once the support goes away on them, they will simply have to move to Linux.

Thank you but doesn't work. I spend all night and not sleep try to use your and others methods ( lot of time spend). I try more three times. In all others 8 times that failed the same message appears. I'm very disappointed with this new OS.
I'm appreciate your attention. I hope the all correction will be done before the official launch.
