Keyboard and Mouse

I manage a small gaming website and lately we have been discussing Keyboard and mouse use on the xbox.  We are all in agreement that modified controllers (rapid fire buttons etc) are cheating but we are split on the Keyboard and Mouse issue.  To make matters worse so it seems are microsoft.  Here are 2 replies from xbox support:

As I understand, you’re checking if using a 3rd party keyboard and mouse adapter on the console’s going to be a violation to the terms of use.

The answer to the said inquiry would be, “no”. You can feel free using the mentioned external accessories. However, we are unable to guarantee its efficiency with the console. We would highly recommend you to continue using the certified Xbox 360 accessory to optimize your gaming experience.

I hope I was able to help you on your concern today.

Dear (removed name),

Microsoft have never released a mouse and keyboard for the Xbox console. These would be considered a modified controller.

Kind Regards

At the gaming website we pride ourselves on not cheating be it PC, xbox, wii, ps3...even old skool board games and we will not promote or support anything or anyone that is cheating!  This debate seems to rage across many forums and so far all I have found is peoples opinions, never fact.  This is an issue that I feel needs a definitive answer. Please help.

Just to clarify, yes, using a Keyboard and Mouse would be considered a modified controller and as such, a Terms of Use violation.

Not only that but the OP fails to realise just how that imposes on the rights of controller users.  Using a mouse and keyboard isn't a prefrence when it imposes on the rights of others forcing them to use one, just to be able to compete.  I've seen this happen on the Dreamcast with Unreal and Quake 3.  The advantage of the mouse compared to a controller is too great in terms of precision and should not be be allowed on our closed network.

so is any modified controller or 3rd part controller considered cheating?  And what action is to be taken if you can prove someone is using one?

Any modified or unlicensed 3rd Party controller is not authorized for use on the Xbox LIVE service. If you can prove this, you would report the user for system tampering. :)

So why dosent Xbox just license a mouse style controller like the split fish? Make it to Xbox specs ie no macros and rapid fire.I'm a PC gamer from way back in quake world the mouse is the way I learned to play it what I'm comfortadle with.I played halo becuz it was on PC I played halo2 becuz I found a mouse adapter for the old Xbox (I actuly started it with the stock controller and hated it let it sit for a year befor I found the smartjoy and then had a blast)now i hound this split fish mouse and chuck controller.so I threw down the cash and got a new Xbox to play halo3 and call of duty.the single player is great and being on the road alot its way easier using the Xbox instead of trying to get a laptop that will Handel the games I play.so I'm all good with just playing single player until a buddy of mine invites me to play.I told them about my mouse and he laughed and told me that thay all ready have a guy that plays with them that uses a mouse and thay was fine with it.tbh thay owned my butt with thier controlers.it would be great to be able to take full advantage of the Xbox live expernces but as it stands I'm stuck with single player and privet games with friends.I'm wondering why the mouse is so hated in the Xbox community?

As a PC gamer I'm sure you're more than aware of just how accurate a mouse is compared to an analogue stick and hence why mice are outlawed on the 360.

I fail to see the difference between using a controller for MP or SP as the control scheme is exactly the same. Everything else is just practice, practice, practice.

And besides if it was introduced it would absolutely give gamers using a mouse and keyboard an unfair advantage over people using controllers.
Just practice like everyone else on LIVE has had to do, and you will get used to playing your games as they are supposed to be played on LIVE, and on a level playing field. If it is not something you can adjust to you could always go back to MP gaming on a PC/laptop.
