broken hard drive

how do i fix the error code 68?

Hey shipmaster, well as you know its a HDD error. It can be caused by one of two things that I'm aware of.

1, Your HDD is broken.

2, The port connecting the HDD to the console is broken.

If you remove the HDD does the console run OK?

Do you have a friend with a 360?, and if you do would they let you borrow their HDD to see if that's the issue.
If their HDD works fine then you know its your HDD that's broken. But if their HDD doesn't work either you know the console will need a repair/service.

I did this when I got this error, because I did not want to go out and buy a new HDD when that may not have been the problem.

Its something to try anyway.

I'm having the same issue. I tried my hard drive in a different xbox and it was having the same issues. Is there a way to fix the hard drive or at least retrieve the data and put it onto a new one? My hard drive causes freezing and I can't access a lot of things.

Hey DNR :).

As far as I am aware there is no fix for E68 that you can perform yourself, but that said it might be worth your while giving support for your region a quick ring just to clarify one way or the other.
As just because I have not heard of it does not necessarily mean that MS can not repair it for you.

As far as your data goes its possible you may be able to transfer it to a new HDD using an official MS transfer cable.
In truth I am not 100% whether that will/will not work though.

Fingers crossed someone else will reply to this post and let you know for sure before you go out and buy one. Or if you are going to give support a ring about repairing your HDD you could ask them while you are on the phone.

Sorry I could not be more specific but I wouldn't want to say it will definitely work and then it not and waste your money.

I'm having the same exact problem!!!! I sent mine in and got a new one just recently. It's definately a hard drive error, because i do NOT think the brand new console they sent me is broken.

@xxkillanoobtoob - if you remove the hard drive, does the error go away?
