Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) not listed in services

Hi, my computer has stopped automatic windows update. I'm using vista 32bit home premium. It seems that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (bits) has been disabled. I tried to turn it on but the problem is IT IS NOT IN THE SERVICES LIST... so i cannot set it to automatic or manual or whatever. All supports info says is to go to services and and set BITS to automatic... but how can i do it if its not in the list ???!!!

Everytime I run windows update it says "errors found code 80246008"

Somebody pleeease help. I'm at my wits end what to do.

I spent far too long trying to fix this. BITS needs to be re-registered first before you can even start trying any of the other solutions on here: sc create BITS binpath= "c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" start= delayed-auto Then either restart, or go into Services (run: services.msc) and restart it yourself.

Corrupt, damaged, or otherwise missing service…

 

If the BITS service was recently deleted, meaning if you only recently started receiving this error code, you can use System Restore to rollback the system to before this issue first began – in turn restoring the missing service.

 

Please note that this one missing service you’ve identified may only be a symptom of a larger problem. I’d recommend that you run the System File Checker (SFC) on your system. It will not replace the missing service, but will scan for and attempt to repair other corruption that may be present.

 

If you were able to successfully restore the service using System Restore you will need to Check for updates to see if the issue has been resolved. If after you’ve restored the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) you continue to receive errors pertaining to this service I recommend that you run the BITS Repair Tool for Windows Vista (KB940520). However, please note that it will NOT run on a system that is missing the BITS service - so again this can only be run after you’re restored the service.

 

Running the System Restore utility…

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2.     Click Continue or provide Administrator credentials if necessary.

3.     Click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.

4.     Select a Date and Time prior to first sign of the issue you’ve described.

5.     If the date you need is in excess of (5) days click the Show restore points older than 5 days check box.

 

Please note: That System Restore affects Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files on your computer. Thus, any recently installed programs, updates, or changes to configuration will be lost if you use System Restore. However, make note that System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos, so it cannot help you restore a deleted file.

 

Running the System File Checker

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.     Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.

3.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

4.     You should see the following on-screen messages:

Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification % complete.

5.     Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message – indicating the results.

6.     If system corruption was found “that could not be repaired” it may be necessary to perform an In-Place Upgrade of the Operating System.
