How do I change the default file explorer view to large icons?

I know that you could do this through Windows Explorer properties on Windows 7, but I'm not seeing the option on Windows 8. Does anyone know how to set the default File Explorer view to show large icons when I open a file, rather than having to scroll to make them larger or change the option every time I look at a new folder?

Hello TylerHolman,

Thank you for asking the Question!

Sorry to know that you face issues with Folder properties . As I get it right you want to set the Large icons in Windows Explorer.

Perform the steps below and check.

a: Press Windows logo + E to open Windows Explorer.

b: Now click the View tab present at the top of the screen.

c: Now select large Icons.

Reply to us if you face any issues with Windows Explorer  or any other Windows Issue, and I would be glad to assist you again and try to rectify the issue as early as possible.

Have a nice day!

Hope this information helps.

the question asked, a sit has been asked on hundreds of other pages, is how to create large icons as default as this useless windows 8 does not remember anything and we have to adjust each and every page of explorer to the large or whatever view we desire because something as simply as setting one or another as default seems to be too difficult for MS to comprehend !

"Does anyone know how to set the default File Explorer view to show large icons when I open a file...."

It took me a while to figure this out. But I think this works.

1. Open up a window in File Explorer (or hit START BUTTON followed by the letter E).

2. Open up the View Ribbon, and select the view option. In your case, you would select "large icons".

3. Still in the View Ribbon, select the "Options" icon (on the far right). If a menu drops down, select "change folder and search options".

4. From this point, things should look just like Windows XP or Windows 7. The "Folder Options" dialog should pop up. Select the "View" tab, and click the "Apply to Folders" button.

What is driving me absolutly crazy is no setting for sub folders. 2000 sub folders with files.

Everytime I open a sub folder it opens in detail with no way I can figure out to set all sub folders in a folder to large icons! If you close that drive and go back you have to reset that folder and sub folder and files again! Very frustrating

Followed BD2K' s

I went as far as the folder never thought to do the same with files.

so far seems to work.

Microsoft made this one a real puzzeler.

Thanks

Tyler,
I doubt you are still trying to figure this out, but if you are, I posted a solution for September 25th and 26h, because the other response here in not applicable in Windows 7, not sure about Windows 8. Let me know if I can help you any further.

If you make it all the way to the end of step 4, but the "Apply to Folders" button is in grey, so that it cannot be clicked on, follow these modified instructions.

1. Open up a window in File Explorer (or hit START BUTTON followed by the letter E).

2. Open a folder or drive. (Ex. open your Drive C, or the Desktop folder)

3. Open up the View Ribbon, and select the view option. In your case, you would select "large icons".
4. Still in the View Ribbon, select the "Options" icon (on the far right). If a menu drops down, select "change folder and search options".

5. From this point, things should look just like Windows XP or Windows 7. The "Folder Options" dialog should pop up. Select the "View" tab, and click the "Apply to Folders" button.

6. Repeat these steps for the other folders or drives. (Ex. If you first opened the Drive C in step 2 then everything inside the Drive C will have the new settings, but you will have to repeat these step if you want the Desktop , or Document, or other main folder/drives to have your desired settings.

Cheers

Right On.  Microsoft has no clue that File Explorer is so difficult to use. The Microsoft Support Engineer, Jessen P, shows above that he doesn't understand, because he doesn't answer the question.  Only shows how to change once, not forever more.

No wonder Microsoft can't come up with a consistent name for File Manager|Windows Explorer|File Explorer or whatever it is called.  Give me Finder on the Mac any day.  There are several after market "Finders" for Windows that look similar to Finder on the Mac.  I think I will look at them again.
