Where is the WINDOWS READER .exe file located in windows 8?

I need to find .exe file of Windows reader, to change opening preference of pdf files in one program I am using to creating pdf files. Does anybody know where is it? Thanks!

The modern UI apps, such as the Microsoft Reader app do not have .exe files like traditional Windows programs.

 

You can set the Default programs in the Control Panel.

 

1. Press the WinKey+X to display the system menu and select Control Panel.

 

2. In Control Panel, set the View By option to Small Icons (top/right of the window).

 

3. Open Set Default Programs.

 

4. On the left side menu, select the program you want to change.

 

5. From these, you can select the Set this program as default or Choose defaults for this program.

 

If you select the Set this program as default option, this will set that program to open any files it is capable of opening.

 

If you select the Choose defaults for this program option, you will be able to select which file types you want this program to automatically open.

Do you want a particular PDF file to open in Windows Reader or all of them?

 

Refer to the following link and follow the instructions under the option: Associate a file type with a program and select Windows Reader as the Default Program.

I think you are all missing the point.
There are other programs that one will install in Win8 that do not know how to find the default programs.
So, one has to manually find that program and associate the file.

Here's an example.
I use Eudora OSE as my default mail program (don't try to change me because it'll never happen after more than 15 years).
If someone sends me a .pdf attachment, Eudora wants to know how I want to open the file. There are but 3 or 4 programs from which to choose in the list and none of them is the Windows Reader.
So, I have attempted to manually search for how to associate the file. I've done this several times but have been unable to find Windows Reader.
Now that I'm here in this forum I can see it's not going to be possible.

It seems the only option is to install Adobe Reader.
My only other option is to "Save" every attachment somewhere on my system then allow Win8 to use the default program for that file.

It just makes life more complicated.
It should be easy to allow the user to associate a program within Win8 to open attachments in programs that have nothing to do with Windows.

But...it's not.

I nearly got there ... now if someone with a bit of Windows scripting experience can extend it:

You can open the default program by running "start" in a command line window.
e.g. "start bla.pdf" will open bla.pdf in the default PDF reader.

No idea where start is located. But you can just run it from cmd.exe (c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe):

cmd.exe /C start bla.pdf

will again open bla.pdf with the default viewer. If your tool can forward additional parameters to the called program, that may already be all you need.

In my case, it can't. It insists on calling "something.exe filename". It has to be "something.exe", not "something.bat" (otherwise I could have written a one-line script that doesn't do anything else than starting the cmd.exe above). It will only give the filename as parameter.

So, how can I get my .bat into an .exe? (Or do what the OP asked for more easily.)

The local path for the app is

 

c:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Reader.....

 

Reader...... with the latest update. with 6.5.3 something....

 

You will not be able to use this exe file contained in this as this will give you an error if you are opening it directly as this file or exe is an app.

I'm in the same position as you. A legacy program cannot use the windows default programs and needs to be manually programmed with the .exe file used to open each file type that I use.

To this end, I've managed to use "C:\Windows\System32\OpenWith.exe". This doesn't open the file immediately, however it does display a dialog box asking:

"How do you want to open this type of file (.pdf)?"

It's just a simple case of clicking on 'Keep using Reader' and the .pdf file opens immediately.

Not exactly the most ideal solution, but it works :-)

I have the same problem. I work with LaTeX and could not find the Reader executable program.

Try it

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c start "reader:"

Worked for me.
