Reset Syskey password

@mods this is not some email password etc.before deleting please read the post.

i read about security of system and  use of syskey .So i used the command in my run menu.A box appeared and i selected " password startup" .i typed the password and it is set but now that password is not being accepted by sys key dialogue and i think i have mistyped something.i have tried all possible combinations but all in vain.

i have password of my admin login account.

Now i am afraid to shutdown or restart my computer bcz i think windows will ask me to enter startup password (the one i set using syskey)

So my question is

1. After shutdown/restart  will i be able to login using my admin account password (i remember it) without using startup password(i have set it by syskey and which i forgot)

2. is there any way to reset syskey startup password as i am already logged in as admin and havent yet logged off.

Thanks for ur help in advance

Answer

Syskey appears to be a rather braindead idea under Windows 7. On the one hand it prevents the user from launching Windows unless he remembers the syskey password. On the other hand it does nothing whatsoever to protect the user's data files. You can boot up a syskey-protected machine with any boot CD (e.g. the Windows 7 Repair CD) and immediately gain full access to all files stored on the disk.

There are two options to undo the activation of syskey:

  1. Boot the machine with a Repair CD, then use System Restore to set Windows back to a time before you activated syskey. Note that this method could cause Windows to report after the third boot that this is not a genuine version . . .
  2. Restore the System partition from an image that you took previously.
If you really need to protect your data then you must encrypt your files. Note that file encryption has its own set of traps for the novice, which can and does cause permanent loss of all encrypted files.
