Windows 7 Japanese IME-- Wrong Keyboard Layout

I recently purchased an Asus ASU33JCA1 Bamboo laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium loaded.

I'm a software developer so I have 5 other Windows 7 machines in the house (I know, 5 is probably overkill but what can I say).

All of my machines were purchased in the US, have the US English version of Windows 7 (Some are Home Premium and others are Ultimate). I have followed the instructions for installing Japanese IME on all of them successfully. Sites such as this have simple to follow instructions:

http://www.yesjapan.com/install_japanese/
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Add-or-change-an-input-language

On my existing machines, I have the language toolbar and if, for example, I type "wa" I get the Japanese Wa character わ.

On the new Asus, the keyboard mapping/layout is incorrect. If I type an H on the keyboard the Japanese Ku character appears on the screen. None of the characters map correctly.

Is this caused by the laptop keyboard not being a standard 101 layout? How do I fix this issue?

Thanks,

Paul

Edit:

Just for the record, this is not the same issue as this one:

My Language bar is already in Hiragana mode, but has the same behavior as that user described.

Answer
I figured this out.

On all other installs of Windows 7 I have ever used IME on (and Windows XP for that matter), the defaults were correct. For some reason on this machine, the default input method was set to "Kana Input."

To change this, the setting is in an odd location. In the language toolbar you have to switch to the Japanese language and hit alt-~ to set it to hiragana mode. At this point, the menu bar now has additional options, one of them is a toolbox (tools).  Click tools and on the general tab is the Input Method setting. This needs to be set to romaji and not kana.

Hope this helps someone.

Paul
