SP4 Pro.

Windows update has tried 5 times now  - fails at the same point during a reboot with BSOD System Thread Exception not Handled but no drivers identified.

Also tried to run the Media Creation Tool and that fails with an error 0x80072F76 - 0x20017.

Hi Steve,

For us to better know your concern, we'd like to ask some information to further isolate the issue.

- Are you getting the BSOD after the update has fail or while the system is updating?

- On what part are you getting an error when you run the Media Creation Tool?

Hope to hear from you soon.

The BSOD occurs during one of the reboots whilst the 1709 update is underway. The system then recovers and reverts to the old version of windows 10 automatically.

The error on the Media Creation Tool is after download when it is preparing - pretty early on in the process.

Thanks,

S

Based on the information that you provided, we suggest that you try to re-download the Media creation tool then try again to use it to repair your Windows and update it. If the issue persist, we recommend that you perform a clean reinstall of your Windows.

Keep us posted.

Hi,

Downloading the tool again worked and it tried to install windows 10 but failed on the first boot with the attached error message.

I have not tried a clean install - that would involve too much rebuilding/reisnstallation of apps/programs etc. afterwards and so I'll likely just not do the update at all if that's the only option.

Thx

S

Hi Steve,

The error that you’ve encountered when you’ve tried installing the Windows 10 version 1709 can be an Internet connectivity issue or a temporary Internet store location is infected with an active malware. Regarding this concern, if you’re already tried running the troubleshooter to fix the Windows Update error. If you haven’t done it yet, we suggest to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, then try to run the automatic update via Windows Update.

Just in case you’ll get the same result, try to turn off the Windows Firewall before installing the update as this may also block the installation of the update. Follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows key + R, type Firewall.cpl.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click on Turn Windows Firewall On or Off.
  4. In Private network settings, select Turn off Windows firewall (not recommended).
  5. Do the same for Public network settings.
  6. Click OK.

Note: After you’ve successfully installed the update, make sure to turn the Windows Firewall on.

Let us know the outcome after performing the steps.

Greetings all, yesterday I also updated to 1709 on my Surface Pro 4 while at home on my home wifi network and this morning when I tried to log in at work while connected to the dock (a network cable, external keyboard and external monitor are all connected to the dock) I found I had lost the Ethernet Adapter (so no work network access), and the dock no longer registered my external keyboard, but the monitor worked. I tried restarting the laptop and it took 6-1/2 minutes to shutdown (yes, I timed it!)  Once i finally got it started up again, I tried to update the dock driver but it just hung for ever - no progress. I managed to roll back the update to the previous settings and everything works fine.

Could the firewall be blocking some of the installation while on my home network?
By default the firewall is turned off for my work network, but on for home and public networks.

FYI - we do not have the speed or bandwidth on my work network to D/L the update, so I had to do it at home.

Any thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

FYI - I got no error messages.

I ran the troubleshooter. It found three issues and "fixed" them. I ran it again and it found the same three issues and "fixed" them again?

I downloaded the Win 10 update as an ISO using the media creation tool and then disabled the Firewall (AVG) and then ran the update. I chose not t "download updates" during the upgrade. It failed on the first boot again (BSOD with the same error message) then attempted to recover the installation - failed with the same BSD and then restored the previous version.

Thx

S

We appreciate the update that you’ve provided. As an additional step, we recommend that you use the System File Checker tool to repair any corrupted system files that may cause the issue. Please check this article for the instructions.

Also, you can run the Deployment Image Servicing and Managements (DISM) tool after SFC. This also works the same way to restore broken system files. Click here for the steps.

We're just here if you need further help.

Are there any solutions to this?

I've tried updating all 3 of my machines today. Each one exhibits this issue.

So, once the update gets to 30%, the machine reboots, starts reloading windows and then crashes to the light blue screen showing SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED.

My 3 machines are totally different, one is a 7" HP tablet, another is a Samsung netbook, and my main one is an Intel 4670k with 32GB and Samsung SSD.

I've gone through all the troubleshooting tips (SFC and DISM, unplugging all extra drives and devices, uninstalling AV etc) on my main machine, to no avail, but as this is happening today on 3 entirely different devices there must be something broken in the update. (?)
