BSOD and unexpected restarts while using pen input on Asus VivoTab Note 8

When using the pen input on my Asus VivoTab Note 8 I have been experiencing both BSOD and unexpected shutdowns in Windows 10. These occur only when I am using the pen (a Wacom pen) while resting my hand on the screen - it has not happened when only my pen is in contact with the screen. After a few minutes of using the pen (in OneNote, in Clip Studio Paint and in Word) it will either:

  1. Stop responding to strokes and then unexpectedly restart (with no error message), or
  2. Go to a blue screen of death with this error: "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA win32kbase.sys".

This error occurs both when I have the latest Wacom Feel drivers installed (v 7.3.1-7, from http://us.wacom.com/en/feeldriver/) and when I have no Wacom drivers installed. As far as I can tell I have the latest drivers from ASUS installed. I have also tried a Clean Boot as described in https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/929135.

It appears I am not the only Asus VivoTab 8 owner to have this issue - http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/threads/asus-vivotab-8-and-windows-10.66837/page-2.

Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with your Asus Vivo Tab Note 8.

I do appreciate your efforts and time. Do not worry, will assist you with the issue.

Win32k.sys blue screen errors can be caused by a variety of hardware, firmware, driver, or software issues.

I suggest you to try the following methods provided below and check if it helps.

Method 1

Step 1: Install the Wacom Feel drivers in compatibility mode and check.

Step 2: Run SFC scan.

Summary

System file check is a utility built into the Operating System that will check for system file corruption The sfc /scannow command (System File Check) scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions where possible.

System file check works on Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1, and win 10

I suggest you to try the steps provided, in the link below in order to run SFC scan on your computer.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_other-update/system-file-check-sfc-scan-and-repair-system-files/bc609315-da1f-4775-812c-695b60477a93

Method 2

Microsoft is constantly updating and improving Windows system files that could be associated with win32k.sys. Sometimes resolving your blue screen of death problems may be as simple as updating Windows with the latest Service Pack or other patch that Microsoft releases on an ongoing basis.

To check for Windows Updates

Step1: Click the Start button.

Step 2: Type "update" into the search box and click check for update.

Step 3: The Windows Update dialog box will appear.

Step 4: If updates are available, click the Install Updates button.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

Hi,

i have exactly the same error. It seems that the touchscreen is not completely disabled when using the pen. When I use the pen all left from the pen is recognized when I touch with my finger. On the right side the touchscreen didn't recognize my finger. An other thing I found is that that my finger is recognized on the under left side (calendar). Every time I left down my hand on this point the calendar pops up and then there is the Bluescreen. On windows 8.1 the hole touchscreen was disabled when using the pen and there was no Bluescreen.

I am experiencing same problem with vivotab note8.

None of above methods could fix this problem.

And there is no availavle update for win 10.

I am very disappointing since onenoteis pre-installed in windows 10, which crashes when both touch and pen input are used, and the app does not do what it is supposed to do.

I'm currently experiencing the exactly same issue. This is verry unsettling since I use this device mainly for drawing, and right now it cannot serve this purpose, windows 10 breaks it! None of the above helped.

Same problem here, at least it's not hardware fault!

The SFC scan did not work for me - no files were repaired. I think the issue is either driver related or an issue with how Windows 10 handles palm rejection when using pen input.

It may help to look at the minidump files from the blue screen crashes.

Can you zip up the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and make available (provide link) via a public folder on OneDrive or similar site?

Here's a couple of links on using OneDrive (SkyDrive):

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/skydrive/add-photos-files-faq

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/onedrive/share-file-folder

If you have problems zipping the minidump files copy the minidump files to another location such as a folder on the Desktop

Also, you do not necessarily have to zip up the minidump files, you can upload them one at a time.

Please find my BSOD dump file link below .

It was created after I tried using my pen with onenote.

Hope this would help to fix this error.

Hi,

Here is the error:

BugCheck 50, {fd8226b7, 0, 98e0d958, 2}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for win32kfull.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for win32kfull.sys

Could not read faulting driver name

Probably caused by : win32kbase.sys ( win32kbase!RIMIsPenPointerDevice+0 )

The process that crashed was dwm.exe (Desktop Windows Manager) which may indicate an issue with the graphics.

However can you install the ATK Package for Windows 10 from the following link and see if it helps any:

http://www.asus.com/ca-en/Tablets_Mobile/ASUS_VivoTab_Note_8_M80TA/HelpDesk_download/

Post back if the error persists.

Thank you for your kind answer, but I have to say it didn't solve the problem.

I already have installed ATK package for windows 10, provided by Asus.

It says it solves some kind of compatability issue regarding on-screen display, and after installing it, it only asks me to check to use "Asus display".

I have no idea what it does to system since there is no OSD function in vivotab note.

Anyway installing ATK package did not help - there were 2 sudden reboots amd 1 BSOD again.

Here is a link for another BSOD dump just in case.
