Fail update KB4524570 (1909) with the beloved 0x80073701

Hello and hi!

So, do you have any ideas about that 1909 update fails?

Why we can't just click Update and reboot our system, we need to be IT-engineers.

Yesterday I got notification about KB4524570 and the other one (about malicious blah-blah update, it was installed)

Good, I clicked Update, it was downloaded and I saw Installing. After 100% I got 0x80073701, no problem, I tried to reinstall it maybe 4-5 times - the same error.

What did I do after?

Of course I googled it a few times.

I read about windows update reset

 - I reset it with a good cmd-line-scripted app wureset (google it if you don't know)

nothing

it can do more!

 - I checked (as always) the system with SFC scan

everything's OK, coz my system is ok.

 - after that I tried to fully disable my ESET

guess what?

I read that it has some connections with old drivers of AMD and maybe BT?

 - said and done. Now I have the latest working AMD drivers on my GPU. Thx.

?!

 - hmm, ok, I went to WU catalog and got this KB

windows 10 is smarter than me. Didn't help.

Trying to remember what else I did.

And you know what?

I don't wanna do smth else coz I'm just a user who wants to see it just working without all this cmd tools and cleaning the system etc etc

Don't tell me to reinstall w10, pls, coz, hmmm, that sounds unprofessional. Better to tell Microsoft to hire someone smarter.

Can we all assume that MS will not push out anymore v1909 updates until this issue is resolved?

Yeah, whenever I try to install it, it installs to 100%, configures updates and restarts. Then it says working on updates and reaches 18%. Then it automatically goes to the log-on screen and when I check the updates, it says it failed to install with error code 0x80040fff. This is really frustrating.

***SOLUTION***

So, m8s, listen to me.

I've had a chat with Microsoft support and they helped me. The THX goes to Kaye.

Follow these steps (the clean can be done with wureset too):

Reset windows update.

Open command prompt as administrator.

You need to stop these services one by one clicking Enter after each command.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

then rename "updates" folders by:

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

then you need to start the services:

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Ok.

Now we have a clean state of WUPDATE.

Download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (just google it and then dl it form MS website)

When you'll run it you'll see that it download updates etc, wait for a few minutes.

When you'll see "Install" at the end turn off your lan/wifi connection and then click Install.

After that you'll need to wait from 30 min to 6-7 (?) hours.

I tried to install it with wifi and stuck on 37% for 1-2 hours. I cancelled it and then ran the installation without the internet.

I stuck on 27% for 40-50 minutes but then it goes (just don't touch it) and I saw 1909. That's it.

Appreciate your diligence in itemizing and sharing your success.  Only problem...I (and many others) don't work for Microsoft.  We have neither the time, skills and/or inclination to "fix" something (else) they screwed up (again).

Remember Windows Millennium (aka Windows Me)?

Thanks for advice! My error was 0x800f0845, but the procedure was the same. After cleaning up WUPDATE, I used the Media Creation Tool and used the Upgrade feature on this computer. Actually, you will load the entire system again! Fortunately, my data and apps remained intact. The whole procedure lasted just over 30 minutes on a fast SSD. Who has a slower hard disk and processor from the washing machine so it really can take more than 6 hours.
It is a shame when users have to perform such complicated procedures because updates are unable to install automatically and crash the whole system!

I tried all the guides online, but none worked (winver 1903 error 0x80073701). Now I tried the Windows Media Creation Tool, ran it, didn't disconnect the internet, used the upgrade option with keep my files and apps. After +- 45 minutes, it was finished and says winver 1909. Everything works without reinstall programs and the system is like before. Thank you. That saved a lot of frustration!
