1080i

Really this doesn't make sense to me. Xbox One has a built-in dedicated scaler chip. This means it should basically be able to convert to any format without problem. The 360 was the same way. you could run that thing on virtually any TV or monitor. Why should this be any different for Xbox One, unless the software is restricting the function of the scaler chip?

People with TVs that are only 480p/1080i-capable should really replace them. They're around $2500.

Why spend $2500 when you can get a 50" (which should be more than big enough for most places) for only $500?

@GG. I understand why the OP wouldn't want to give up a 73" and go to a 50" just to get 1080p, but at the same, a 1080i TV has to be years old.

I've got a 55" hanging in my bedroom that's 1080p...and I've been thinking about moving the X1 there but I really wanted it to control everything in the living room. I really need 70" or bigger in the room and I had no desire to upgrade until the X1 stripped 1080i from what my cable provider is sending my TV.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Really, ignoring the video games, why is something that is trying to be the center of my home theater decreasing the screen quality of normal television? I would actually be accepting if someone provided a reasonable answer, but as it stands I'm just confused by it.

Again, I'd love to buy a new massive TV for my living room, don't get me wrong. But I would be fine with my existing TV if the X1 would just let me watch TV in 1080i when using the pass through.

Lol, it is years old. Dropped five grand on it 8 years ago, trying to ride it out a bit longer. Guess I should have saved my money back then and only invested in a 720p model.

@IceStorm III The one I want is 5k, but you are right there are plenty at lower price points.

My old TV from 2005 was a 42" Rear Projection LCD 1080i/720p model. I always ran my 360 and my TiVo in 720p mode. There was no visible difference between 1080i and 720p, and 720p provides 60 frames/sec whereas 1080i does not. I would just use the existing TV in 720p mode.

Although I have sympathy for anyone in this situation, it a buyers responsibility to check new equipment is compatible with that which is already owned.

The new consoles are aimed at the present and future standard not the past, should composite cables or a scart lead be supplied again for sd too?
