Windows XP Automatic Updates receive "Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found." Also "Error 0x80240036: Could not start the automatic updates service on local computer"
Upgraded CPU which was later found to be bad. Replaced with original CPU. Re-installed Windows XP Home using a slipstreamed CD that I burned from the original non-OEM disc which had Service Pack 2. Integrated Service Pack 3 which I obtained from MS
site. Everything works fine except for Windows Update. The setting appear to be correct in Administrative Tools/Services. The Service Status is "Stopped." When I attempt to start Automatic Updates from Administrative Tools/Services I receive "Error 127:
The specified procedure could not be found." Also "Error 0x80240036: Could not start the automatic updates service on local computer". Used the whole gamut of anti-virus and malware programs and found nothing. Currently use Avast 7.0.1426. I also used
the various MS Fix-It Tools to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
1.What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current?
2.Has (another) Norton or a McAfee application ever been installed on this machine?
3.What are the fix its applications that you have used till now to try fixing this issue?
Try the following method and check if that helps you with the issue for the error 127 you receive.
Method 1:
Register the DLL file by performing the following steps:
1. Click Start and click on Run, in the search box type CMD and press enter.
2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on 'Run as Administrator'.
3. Type the following command and press Enter. Regsvr32 msvcp71.dll
4. Exit the Command Prompt window.
Method 2: Run System File Checker (SFC):
(Note: You need an installation disc of XP to start the system file checker scan.)
The SFC command is used to detect and fix problems with the protected files on the Windows XP and Windows Vista computers. This command helps in initiating the Windows
File Protection Service and enables you to scan all Windows protected files for their integrity and replace any problematic files that are identified.
1. Click Start and in the start search box type CMD
2. Right click on CMD in the list and click on 'Run as Administrator'
3. Type the following command and press Enter. Sfc /scannow
4. Exit the Command Prompt window.
