compaq nx6110 win xp no wifi

got a computer off a friend, had to get a new monitor, computer has not been on for several years , have been updating it, but i can't get wifi working. the light remains off, and hp wireless assistant does not open , even after i uninstalled it and downloaded a new one from the official hp site.
