Windows 7 x64 SP1 Update Stuck on "Preparing to configure..."

I successfully downloaded and began the install about 3 hours ago.  everything went fine until it rebooted.  It has now been on a page that says: "Preparing to configure Windows.  Do not turn off your computer"...for two and a half hours now.

What do I do?  Do I wait longer?...The animated circular icon that shows that the machine is working is still spinning, so I don't think it's frozen...I also occasionally see the HDD LED flickering indicating some activity...but it's just been way too long now.

Had this same problem - after waiting about 3 hours (kept seeing infrequent disk activity), I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL and got the login screen.  Logged in and everything was fine.  Seems as though someone forgot to program in the "what to do when complete" portion of the update. I now hope that it happens on another pc just so I can do it again...
