Since June 18th 2012 Windows Update has been trying to install a new Windows Update Agent and has failed repeatedly.
I have rund the Fixit's without any help. I have run the fixes described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997 which are:
Method 1: restart your computer, and then try to install the updates again
Method 2: Run the System Update Readiness tool (CheckSur.exe)
Method 3: Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)
Method 4: Reset the content of the Catroot2 folder
Method 5: Remove any incorrect Registry values
Method 6: Register the Windows Update files
Method 7: Make sure that your antivirus application does not scan certain files
Method 8: Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
Method 9: Clear the BITS queue of any current jobs
Method 10: Download and manually install the 958056 update
Method 11: Rename Pending.xml
Method 12: Run Chkdsk on the Windows partition
I also ran the items on page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310 with no success. I see that someone else has the problem and built a custom solution, but didn't really share it, see http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/226d7698-c6d4-4783-8534-b955d4a441aa and I have tried to conntact Microsoft Support but can't get through.
I am running Windows 7 professonal 64 bit version 6.1.7601 service pack 1 build 7601 on a Dell xps L502X with an Intel i7 2670QM and 8 GB of ram. This is the error it gives me and of course I have followed these links to no avail.
