Windows 7 SP1 64 bit Windows Update hangs

Windows Update worked fine in May, but this month, hangs while checking for updates. I have let it run all night. There is no error message or error code, it just keeps "checking for updates".

Microsoft Security Essentials will update the definitions.

Windows update shows 'Last checked' as this morning, but last update (other than MSE definitions) as occurring May 10. I KNOW there are updates available inasmuch as I have another computer which has successfully downloaded and installed numerous 'Important" updates of late.

I found one item in looking at prior comments mentioning a "Fixit" tool. I tried that with no success.

Any help or suggestions?

Thanks.

Answer

Install the latest version of the Windows update client, included in the July 2016 Update Rollup:

Make sure to have its prerequisite, KB3020369, installed:
