error code: 0xc0000098 Missing file: /bcd

Yesterday I came home, tried to boot up my Lenovo Ideapad Yp510 and then i saw the error code 0xc0000098 telling me there is a Missing file: /bcd.

I've spent a whole day trying to resolve this, browsing from forum to forum. All answers i found required me to have a Windows 8 cd (which didn't come with the laptop when i bought it). So my question is: Is there a way to resolve this problem without having a windows 8 installation disk? I'd really like to keep my files that are on there too.

Thanks in advance

Hi Chrisansong,

Thank you for posting your query on this forum. I’ll try my best to assist you with this issue.

Even, if you do not have the Windows 8/8.1 installation disk, you can still resolve this issue. You can either create a Windows 8/8.1 bootable installation/recovery media by using another Windows 8/8.1 computer or you can access the recovery partition of this computer and use the advanced troubleshooting to resolve this issue.

If you can find a way to access the recovery partition of this computer, then you may access it and then use advanced Startup Settings to fix this issue. To access the recovery partition, you may refer to the user manual that came with this computer or contact the computer manufacturer technical support.

If your computer does not have a recovery partition or if you cannot access it, then you need to find another Windows 8/8.1 computer with the recovery partition and then create a Windows 8/8.1 bootable installation/recovery media and using that, you should be able to resolve this issue.

To create it, refer to the Microsoft article given below and follow the steps in it to create a Windows 8/8.1 Recovery Media:

Create a USB recovery drive

Once after creating the USB Recovery Drive, you need to boot the computer from it. To do this, change the boot device priority to USB drive in the BIOS. To access the BIOS, you can either contact Computer Manufacturer’s Technical Support or refer to the user manual that came with your computer. Changing any settings in the BIOS is very risky and is always recommended to be done by an expert. So, I would suggest you to get in touch with the Computer Manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance.

Important: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Once after changing the boot device priority to USB drive, try booting the computer from it and then follow these steps to perform an Automatic Repair of Windows 8.1

Method 1: Perform an Automatic Repair of Windows 8.1 using its Recovery Media

a) Boot the computer from the USB Recovery Drive.

b) In the “Windows Setup” dialog box that appears, set the Time and currency format, Keyboard or input method and the language to install and then click “Next”.

c) Click on “Repair your computer” from the lower left corner.

d) From the “Choose an option screen”, click on “Troubleshoot”.

e) Click “Advanced Options” in the “Troubleshoot” screen.

f) In the “Advanced Options” screen, click “Automatic Repair”.

g) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete Automatic Repair.

Now, check if you are able to boot the computer. If the issue persists, then try the next method.

Method 2: Rebuild and Repair Master Boot Record, Boot Sector and Boot Configuration Data

Please follow these steps after booting the computer from the Windows 8.1 Recovery media.

a) In the “Windows Setup” dialog box that appears, set the Time and currency format, Keyboard or input method and the language to install and then click “Next”.

b) Click on “Repair your computer”.

c) Click on “Troubleshoot” and then select “Advanced Options”.

d) Click on “Command Prompt” and type the following commands and press “Enter” after each command:

BOOTREC /SCANOS

BOOTREC /FIXMBR

BOOTREC /FIXBOOT

BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD

e) Restart the computer.

Hope this resolves the issue. Please get back to us with the troubleshooting results.
