Office for iPad slow typing

I have created several documents in the desktop version off Office 365 and would like to be able to edit them on my ipad.  I've noticed that typing in these documents is unacceptably slow.  I've tried switching compatibility mode on the desktop, but to no avail.  Any thoughts??

Hello,

I would need more information to assist you with the issue.

Is the problem while working with Word documents on iPad or on the desktop?

If it is on iPad, does typing in other Office applications work normally?

You may try editing / typing in Excel or PowerPoint files on the iPad and check the behavior.

Provide more information to help us assist you further.

Thank you

The issue I'm experiencing is on the iPad. I seem to only have this slow response to my typing input only when using tables in word for iPad. I had a similar issue on the desktop version of 365 but when I used compatibility mode, the typing lag greatly improved. I made sure that I did the same compatibility mode in hopes that would solve the problem, but it did not.

Thanks

I am having exactly the same problem.

I have an ipad 3, and the typing in tables is ridiculously slow in word.

there is at least a 30 to 40 second lag.

I might have to cancel my subscription and go back to pages if this persists.

Hi Doug,

I downloaded these updates yesterday before I posted, and I still have the problem.

I attempted to narrow the problem down. Typing in tables is not a problem on small, single page, tables. However, I'm attempting to take meeting minutes in a table that spans 16 pages, and that's what is slowing me down.

the ANNOYING thing is that Evernote handles these tables without any trouble whatsoever.

And yes, I have downloaded them to my iPad, I'm not attempting to work on them from the cloud (which slows it down even more)

On my 16 page table, I did the following to try to make it faster, all of which didn't work:

  • removed all formatting
  • saved it as RTF
  • tried it in compatibility mode
  • removed all document elements EXCEPT for the table
  • Copied and pasted the tables into a different document
  • Recreated the tables in a new document on the iPad (when it was just one page it worked fine, but as soon as it extended to two pages, it slowed down, getting noticeably slower with each subsequent page added. I stopped after 3, not wanting to waste any more time/cause myself more irritation)

oh, and if it helps, I have the iPad A1403 64 GB, and TONS of available memory, because we just reformatted this thing and there's nothing on this iPad other than MS Word and MS Excel.

I've had a similar problem in Excel for the iPad fields. It happens in a fairly large, multi-page worksheet I use in fields I've created by merging several cells. I seem to be able to type data into the fields initially with no issues, but at some point (and I don't know what "triggers" this behavior), each time I hit a key it displays very slowly onscreen, and in duplicates (for example, when typing "Excel," I get EExxcceell). Each letter (or duplicate) takes at least a second or so to appear. If you hit the "Delete" key to erase the typing, it, too, erases two characters for each single push of the key. So, there's no way to correct the doubling of the characters. I've worked with this same worksheet hundreds of times in Excel for Mac 2011 and never had any issues.

I've tried a few of the same solutions as veegeedubya, but once the field starts responding slowly and with duplicates, I can't seem to get it to respond normally to keystrokes. So far, I haven't seen this behavior in Word for the iPad, but I don't use Word nearly as much as Excel for the iPad, and only have one or two Word documents that I'd routinely be using that are longer than one page and have imbedded tables that I'd be typing in.

When the slow typing begins, it essentially makes it impossible to enter any further data into the misbehaving fields. I create a duplicate of the problematic worksheet to enter health history data for EVERY ONE of my clients, so when these fields go sour on me, it creates a big, recurring problem! Fixing this issue would be much appreciated!

Same problem here. There is about a third of a second delay between typing each character in word.

This is unacceptable. I feel like I have wasted my money for an Office 356 subscription because I bought it just to use Word on my iPad Mini but the lag makes the ipad version useless!

It is now Sep 1 and the problem persists. I am using the latest version of WORD 365 on my iPad 3 and at times it is almost impossible to type.

Look forward to hearing from Microsoft

Have you considered using OneNote? OneNote is much better suited for quick documents like meeting minutes. Then from OneNote you can export to a MS Word file.
