Windows Live ID and Email Adress problem

Ok so i'm posting this from my other xbox live account because i can't get onto my other one. I can't change the settings on my account or sign into xbox.com with it because i can't figure out my windows id password. My brother is the one who set up the windows live id and he can't remember the password, so i tried sending a reset password to the email address connected to it. Since it used to be my brother's account i went and asked him what the password was to his email, and he says he can't remember because he made it so long ago. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem or is it permanent? It's just maddening that i'm looking at my profile settings right now, i can play on xbox live but only if i go buy a prepaid card, and i can't change anything about the account. Is my account just lost?
