DNS error - Xbox connection broken for days at a time

Hi All,

Let me start by saying that I have already read the sticky on DNS errors, and the microsoft technical page! However, after going through all the suggested fixes I believe it is probably something else (though I have no idea what)

The Problem:

This problem started a couple of weeks ago, the Xbox would sign out of LIVE - I'd go through the network test as usual, but now it gets stuck between connecting to the router and connecting to the internet, citing a "DNS Error". No matter how many times I reset the router, Xbox, connection settings, manually entering DNS server setting from other computers connected to the same router, it would not work. But a few days later, it magically starts working again with no input from me whatsoever.

This has happened about 5 times now, and being shut out of xbox LIVE for days at a time is seriously annoying!

Background Information:

Area: UK

Xbox: Slim 250gb.

My ISP is Virgin Media, using a standard NETGEAR router they provided. This house has a lot of devices connected to the router simultaneously, other consoles, phones and laptops mainly.

Xbox is right next to the router, problem still persists even with an ethernet cable plugged in, only started happening in the last month or so.

I am aware you reset your router already but have you tried resetting your modem

I found a post on VirginMedia.co.uk (your ISP) about DNS issues on the 360

community.virginmedia.com/.../1044789

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply! We don't have a modem as the router just plugs straight into the wall - I think it's cable broadband! So I can't do that :(

Are you sure the thing you refer to as router is not the modem itself, because you need a modem to have internet

That's where the ethernet cable comes out of

You must have a router or a modem in order to have proper working internet on your XBOX console.

If it plugs right into the wall, it is not going to work.

Hi,

Can you try different DNS servers instead of the Virgin ones, try using:- 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Thanks for the replies -

Fearednightmare: I think it must be, however, after resetting it using a pin, it still doesn't work - still citing DNS errors

Unknown - See above

Shadowman - Thanks for the suggestion but those don't work either :(

So are you saying it works ok and then stops working and then works again even if you do nothing? If so it sounds like an issue within the Virgin network to be honest

If Google DNS (those ip addresses I gave you) also don't work then its not a real DNS error and sounds more like the traffic is getting blocked/dropped somewhere

Yeah, that's what it sounds like :( It doesn't really make sense though, as there are other console gamers in this house whose 'nets functioning fine. Multiple other computers (such as this one!) are still connected and working fine.

It's a bizarre and annoying problem, it just suddenly disconnects, even mid-game and then won't reconnect for days but then will suddenly work again. It's driving me mad as there is no apparent reason as to why it should just stop working like this!

BF3 is the multiplayer game I'm playing atm, which I have for both 360 and pc, it cut out last night on 360 and won't reconnect, but works fine on PC still. So i doubt it could be the game =/

Which hub do you have the hub or superhub? Theres the VMDG280 (Hub) and 480 (Superhub)

I take it you've tried resetting your Xbox network settings to factory defaults, also is UPnP enabled screenshots.portforward.com/.../UPnP.htm if so make sure just UPnP is enabled and no Xbox ports are forwarded and that the Xbox ip address is set to auto

Since your computer is working have you tried a bridge connection between your computer and your xbox ?

just connect your xbox to your computer via ethernet and your computer connected to wireless

Then go to netwerk settings -> network adapters and select the connection from your computer to wireless and your xbox to your computer

(Should say lan connection [which is your xbox] and then a wifi connection [your computer to the router]

select those 2 and right click bridge connection

That is however if you're using a PC with windows not sure how to do it on a mac
